That's because, iirc, the only "certified" gear oil is GM-spec. You can put other stuff in there, and I'm sure it'll work fine...But if there's ever a problem and the dealer finds out -- whoosh goes your warranty coverage.

Engine oils are different but must meet the GM dexos requirements.
