I have never driven a CAGS-equipped car, but from what I understand, it's a solenoid switch that enages in certain conditions, like you said, if the rpm is under 2000, the throttle position is less than 25%, and the temp is above 160 degrees. (I made those conditions up, but I think it's something like that.) When the switch engages, it literally locks 2nd gear out, so when you pull the shifter down, it will go down and around the gate into 4th gear. Physically.

So how can you hardly notice that?

Do you mean it rarely shifts from 1st to 4th? Or do you mean that when it does shift from 1st to 4th you don't notice it? Because I'm pretty sure I'd notice the difference between 2nd and 4th gear...

And speaking of automatically going into 4th gear, is there an electronic gear indicator or CAGS indicator letting you know it shifted into 4th for you?
it doesnt shift it for you. it disallows you from shifting into 2nd. and forces you to go into 4th gear. it is on a manual, you still shift it. but like your conditions that you stated, it will not allow you to go into 2nd based on vehicle speed, engine load, etc.
