One thing to keep in mind: Average speed. That is the real killer of MPG.
If you're doing highway miles, then your avg speed should be 46+ and the mpg will be nice. In town, a realistic avg speed would be 30-40 if you just drive.
If you have stop and go traffic, then every minute sitting at stop drops your overall average because of the 0 mph on the speedometer. so if you're like me, who has an avg speed of 18, your mpg is going to suck and be around 14.9 to 15.4. When I fill up and avoid stop and go traffic (and drive-thrus) my avg speed is 35 and my mpg is 17.8. Same driving style, but those minutes sitting at 0 or even 5 mph have a HUGE impact on mpg.
Of course, when I'm heavy footed, the average speed can be 18 and the mpg will be 13.4 - 13.8.
