It's not revolutionary but it's good and may be more important than you expect when considering CAFE. Beyond pure mpg's DI will allow some high compression with regular octane though, which would save something like another mpg in costs (or more if your premium fuel is overpriced) even if it doesn't show on the sticker.
As for the Sky RL and Solstice GXP, GM could definately get them up to 30+ highway mpg's with a six speed and possibly a few other tweaks, but costs would increase a bit and a little performance might be sacrificed. It still shows that a DI V8 isn't a magic bullet for 30 highway, but I would have said the 3.6 V6 rated at 29 also showed that.
