I doubt gas is the problem. all the gas stations pretty much get their gas from the same places (wholesalers), only the additives change. on top of that, there are filters on the tanks, the pumps, and in your car. it's highly unlikely enough water made it into your fuel system to stop the car completely. and leaving your gas cap off entirely wouldn't cause those problems. that just triggers the check engine light to alert you to a leak in the vapor recovery system. its pretty much telling you fuel vapor is escaping into the atmosphere which keeps the tree huggers from sleeping at night.

personally, I'd take it somewhere and spend the 50-100 in diagnostic time to find out exactly what is wrong with it. it can get pretty expensive just replacing parts hoping it takes care of the problem.
