They could check to make sure there's no signs of a deployment. And if there are, they make sure they've been replaced correctly. I'm sure the computer gives them a diagnostic reading as well.
Here in NY, they do all of that stuff except a tailpipe emissions test. Our 'emissions' test consists of letting a computer talk to the car, and make sure nothing's wrong with it. Not a bit of air is ever whiffed.
