The thing is, I know exactly what he's getting at. I wouldn't use quite the same description, but there is something about the sound of an automatic as it runs up through its gears that's a dead giveaway for what it is (the A10 in the new ZL1 and presumably running in some sort of track mode is the only exception I can even think of).
I've been driving MT cars since before I had my license - all of my practice driving including the seat time in the H.S. driver ed cars. Something like 53 years at this point. But my younger sister (65) and brother (59) have either never driven MT at all, or so rarely that it might as well be 'never'.
My wife learned MT driving about 45 years ago, both kids and so far one of the grand-kids have driven stick since before they turned 17 (NJ license age).
I think it helps point kids toward driving stick if they're constantly exposed to it as simply the way some cars work. It's perhaps easier/less scary once you've watched people work a MT and seen that it's really not all that difficult.
