I decided to just buy a salvaged ZL1 dash for a couple hundred dollars rather than cut a hole in my original dash. It seemed like a better option for me. I also like the Alcantra insert in the ZL1 dash.
The install is time consuming but totally doable for a shade tree mechanic. You do need a little mechanical ability, I give a difficulty rating of 6/10. The new dash even made it easier since it's literally a direct swap.
