TPMS Sensors---Do They Need To Be Activated?

I was at the Chevy Dealer today picking up some parts, and got into a discussion with the manager about the OEM TPMS sensors. He was saying that it costs $70 per wheel to "activate" the sensors in a wheel. Is this right? Do the sensors have to be activated? Meaning, if I buy a set of wheels with OEM TPMS sensors...does the learn horn honk process synch the sensors with the car or is there really some passive/active process that is needed?

I hate these damn things....

BS while the sensors themselves are expensive they do not need to be activated. The only thing you need to do is program them. This is the horn honking process youre talking about. You can do it yourself in about 8 minutes. In the owners manual it tells you how.

However, if they won't sync right away, drive it for a while (couple of miles or so should do) then the DIC should pick up a reading. Then you can do the sync. I know from switching tires up.

Thanks guys...yeah I have done the horn honk process many many times before. Just wanted to make sure I was treating new sensors correctly.

Yep you're good. Though I'd report your dealer to GM for trying to screw you. That and find a new dealer.

Run from that dealer, he is either scamming you or full of crap!

The relearn procedure found in the owners manual works fine on sensors, right out of the box. I use an electronic TPMS tool to relearn the ones here locally.
