tap shift help please!

so my friend has a 2010 dodge challenger SE, 5 spd auto, with the "slap shift manual" option on it, which i have driven and its fun! but today he was riding in my car and i was using tap shift & he kept saying "it doesnt feel right when you shift it". he asked me what rpms i shift at, and to be honest i never pay attention to it. i listen to the engine, and shift when it gets high. he said he shifts around 2500 rmps. can some one enlighten me if im doing something wrong? its not so much that i care about his opinion, but i dont wanna hurt my powertrain.. fyi i just recently started using the tapshifting and have never driven a manual before, so i may be quite paranoid but any help is much appreciated! thank you

i normaly shift just about befor on or after 2,000

also to note if your on 4th and you shift down to 3ed let it go abit to build its power up to 2,000 rpm but ruffly around there

the shift points for me normaly

1est 15

2ed 20

3ed 35 to 40 range

5th 45 to 50

and i shift into sixth soon as i hit 50 mph works good also uphill downshift so you can keep power to climb the hill

if your in 4th and you downshift to third it lags its normal third is the mid point so it will drop about 200 rpm or a bit more then build up thats normal need to compacate for it wont happen all the time but you will learn it

if you shift too soon you will know your car will bog down alot and you will feel rumbleing in your steering wheel and pedels just down shift so it evens out

also dont worry about harming anything it has fail safe features wont let you shift if it feels you will hurt the engain or tranny

as i mentioned in sever other threads i drive manual 90% of the time

ease way to remeber it shift at 2,000 rpm on the dot if you do that your MPG will go up and you will just coast gear to gear smooth it

if you feel the urge to gun it like at a red light go up to 3,000 rpm you will get all the power you will need to get up to speed

if you try to shift around 4 to 5,000 rpm you will hit 80 befor you can blink lmfao

np im glad i can help keep me posted on how it works out for you have fun and exprement dont worry about hurting it it wont let you

also to note the D mode will go up to 2,500 on ave befor it shifts and its hestent like it bogs for a sec in M mode its alot quicker on the shifts thus it keeps the rpms down thus you can gain more MPG

it is ok to shift at 1,800 1,900 it will do the same but to keep it ease and to get into habbit just remeber 2,000 rpm and your good to go

yeah i noticed the hesitation that it has while in drive, basically is non existent while using the tapshifters which i thought was cool! when i first did it, it kind of just took off quicker than i expected, i thought it was awesome!

yeah it feels so differnt in m in frist gear alot more held back the gear ratio changes though i could be mistaken on that fact dont qoute me lol thus why i love manual mode all the preks of a stick shifter minus the drawback IMO i know i know people will say "cant EVER replace the stick shift" and i agree but you sure as hell can get close!

yea i know what you mean! i really wanted to have a manual in this car, but as i said only being 18 ive never driven a manual before and so i figured the auto was the best route. then in 2009 i first heard the auto's were coming with a tap shift option and i was like HELL YEAH. haha but i would deff like to get a manual one day. i get asked a lot, why not just save money and trade up to a SS M6? but i dont plan on getting rid of this car ever, since its my first car and practically everyone in my family has owned camaro's i plan on keeping this one. one day soon id love to learn to drive stick and own one sometime in the future!

Personally if I were to bother with the tap shifters, I wouldn't shift at anything less than 3500 RPM ... IMO if your shifting at 2k, let the computer do it for you ...

+1.

I've just started using tap shift here and there, I use it to shift at higher RPS (obviously). If I wanted to shift at lower RPS, I'll drive on auto.
