Our ZL1 Story

So friends things here on the forum have gotten a bit boring now that all the hype is gone and we are waiting for the real excitement to begin so I thought I would share how our ZL1 came to be. Here goes.

I’m at work in mid September just prior to my birthday and I received this email from my great wife of over 36 years. It goes like this

I think it might be time for an upgrade from the GTO??
http://editorial.autos.msn.com/blogs/autosblogpost.aspx?post=8ea7708f-d21b-4606-b441-15f2f43471be

So I look at the above link to the new ZL1. Then I send the reply:

Ya think? That would be niceeee!

Later that night at home I ask the wife “So what do you want? - More zoom ‘cause I can add a blower to the goat. More rumble ‘cause I can change the exhaust? Or a new car? She replies - “all of the above”.

With that conversation our quest began. I went and drove a new ‘12 2SS centennial edition. Then had the wife go drive it. The sales personal promised me they would have an allocation but just in case I went to another dealer and asked if they had any requests for the ZL1. They basically knew nothing about it and tried to sell me a SLP ZL1. I kindly said no thank you and explained the difference. They said I would be the top of their list if they got an allocation. The day for allocations came and I went down to the dealer late in the day to see what they knew. They knew nothing. That night I was a bit disappointed cause neither dealer had an allocation. The next AM I called several dealers and all those who had a allocation said theirs were spoken for. Just after noon the second dealer called and said that they had an allocation and that if I wanted I could come down and place an order like we wanted it. So I went and did so. We have a Silver Ice Metallic on order w/exposed carbon fiber, automatic and 5 spoke AL wheels. All at MSRP. We now have an order number and the 1100 code.

Ironically this is the dealer I bought our first Camaro from in September of 1976 just over 35 years ago.

Our first car was a “66 GTO the wife then fiancé and I pooled our $$ together to buy it used with 97,000 miles on it. We sold it just over a year later ‘cause we could not afford to drive it and get married too. Premium gas was up to 54.9 cents per gallon. We went form that to a ‘72 Vega that I was going to put the 327 and tranny from grandmas police intercepter in - but thats another story. We sold it a year and a half later and bought the above Camaro. We’ve enjoyed HP ever since that GTO.

Some of you may say it’s a waste for an “old man” of 58 to have a car like this. I don’t think so. We both enjoy HP. The wife and I like to go “crusing”. She loves the “rumble” and goes to sleep in a short bit. I love to drive. I may try autocrossing it a bit. I don’t know. With the goat I had to compete in the modified class with the 4wd STI’s. That wasn’t much fun ‘cause there’s no way to compete with 1000 lb. less and 4wd.

Well time will tell and that’s our story.

I don't think you'll EVER hear a guy on here tell you you shouldn't have this car because of your age!!

What a nice story, and I'm glad things are coming full-circle for you. Awesome!

I was thinking more about your 66 GTO, your first camaro or even your Vega!

I had a vega wagon once I never got to finish...

I think you would be surprised how many people over the age of 50 are
going to be buying the ZL1. This is the kinda car that helps bring back our
youthfull memories of chevelles, trans ams, gto's, 1st gen camaro's etc.
Bottom line enjoy its going to be a lot of fun.

I might have pictures of the GTO or Vega somewhere but who knows where. We've lived in 5 different places in the past 35 years including the other side of the world.
