Recommended Oil Filter
I tried looking. I know it has probably been posted and discussed before. Frankly, don't feel like wasting any more time looking for it. What is the best oil filter for the V-8?

I don't know specifically what's the "best" but I use the K&N HP-1017

From the owner's manual - pf48
Been using AC Delco filters for decades, never seen a reason to use anything different from what the engineers spec'd for it. It has the right micron filter rate, the right anti-drain back valve... warranted by every GM dealer in the country (match that one with any aftermarket filter). Not that the warranty will ever be needed, I've never seen a bad AC Delco filter. |

I suggest looking at Royal Purple, mobil 1, amsoil and k&n oil filters. Those are basically the best on the market, and from what I've seen, the RP and Amsoil filter have the best filtering and durability.

Beaten by Fram and Purolator.... In many years as a dealer tech ... never once saw a problem with an ACDelco filter. Can't tell you how many Purolators and Frams had problems. There is only one filter in that list that was spec'd out by the engineers that designed the engine, and the only one covered by the factory warranty. Show up at a dealer with any other brand with a problem, and here's your estimate. Seen that happen countless times. Most memorable was the Purolator air filters that shed fibers that burn onto the MAF hot wire. New MAF...$$$$ very pricey on some cars. Then we saw tons of off brand oil filters with the wrong anti-drain back valve, causing cold start knocks. It's your car and money, spend as you wish and enjoy. |

Amsoil makes great filters as well. Part number EA15K50. They are a bit expensive. But worth the extra coin to keep your oil filtered well.

AC Delco Ultragard UPF48R. This filter requires a different wrench that a UPF48. High pressure canister same as on the ZR1 & Z06.

What makes it "high pressure"? Educate me.

Thicker canister. Needed when the '09 Z06 and ZR1 went to a high volume/ high pressure pump.... if the motor was hammered on when cold could really make some high pressures. As stated below in the info, the UPF48R can be used on a PF48 application, internals identical..... but a waste of money if you don't have an '09+ LS7/9. The LS3/L99 will never have oil pressures anywhere near the burst spec of a PF48 (which is 5X's the engines normal pressure) Again, pays to read the owners manual to avoid wasting money. "GM Powertrain has released a new oil filter for the 2009 Corvette. The new design UltraguardTM Gold UPF48R oil filter will be used on the following OEM applications: "Z06 - LS7 7.0L and ZR1 - LS9 6.2L "According to GM, this filter was designed with the following in mind: “With the addition of piston oil cooling nozzles and other unique lubrication system requirements, a new design dual-rotor oil pump is required for the LS9 application. The new design oil pump produces greater volume and higher system oil pressure. To meet those requirements, a new oil filter with higher BURST strength is required. "The UltraguardTM Gold UPF48R filter (U is for Ultra and R is for Racing) is black in color, has a thicker exterior shell and can be identified as GM part number 12626224. The internal components are the same in both the UPF48R and the PF48 oil filters. The UPF48R can be used in applications where the PF48 is specified. "GM requires the UPF48R for the LS9 application and is also used for the LS7 application as both engines are built at GM’s Wixom Engine Performance Build Center." |
