Royal Purple Says Won't Void Warranty. We'll See What GM Has To Say...

So I'm getting a little tired of the rough shifting into 2nd and 3rd. I gave it almost 10k miles and it hasn't really improved at all. I emailed Royal Purple and explained the issue to them. This was part of their response, "The Aisin 6-Speed only comes with the V-6 engine. We recommend Royal Purple Max Gear 75W-90 (part #01300, quart bottle) and it meets warranty requirements for this transmission." They say it meets warranty requirements, but GM has the final say in that now don't they. So I forwarded Royal Purple's response on to GM to see if switching to that fluid will void the powertrain/transmission warranty or not. Based on what I've read in past threads on here, I'm not holding my breath, but it doesn't hurt to try, right?

Interesting, seems that there are a few out there with issues. I would think moving to RP, Mobil 1 or AMSOIL would help over the factory fill fluid. At least if you changed it out yourself and used Mobil 1 or AMSOIL they can't tell if it isn't the factory fluid, now RP is a different story since it is purple.

As long as the fluid meets the standards listed in the manual why would GM not warranty it? It's only when you use something that doesn't meet those specs that you risk that.

I used Royal Purple Max Gear 75W-90 in the transmission of my 1LT and it smoothed it out nicely. I don't see any reason why GM would void the warranty using a lubricant that is not GM as long as it meets GM specs.

This is my thinking as well, but I'm not sure I want to leave a warranty item as expensive as the tranny to chance, hence the email to GM seeing if I can get validation in writing (email). Never hurts to ask.

Aren't there API-standards on the bottle to show it meets manufacturer guidelines? I know I see that symbol on motor oil, but I can't recall for tranny/gear oil... I'm sure it's the same though.

I know that RP also makes their HPS-oil for motors that they don't recommend for vehicles still under warranty. It has additional additives (or more of what's in conventional warranty-approved oil [I don't recall if it's one or the other]) that don't meet API-certification, so that's where I'd be concerned. That's not your situation, exactly, but I thought I'd add that, just in case.

Just got an email from GM saying they've forwarded the issue on to the appropriate people that can give me an answer. Let's see what they come back with.

snymat68,

Your doing the right thing dude! Just because Royal Purple says it won't hurt your warranty is easy for them. Sounds like a sales ploy to me. For safety sake never use anything different unless your GM dealer backs you up. During the warranty period if anything goes wrong they can void your warranty in a heart beat. The dealership gets paid for the work from GM factory. No pay no warranty. After that you stuck holding the bag.

Got an email from GM again today...

"Based on the nature of your email and the research we have made for you, we have decided that calling you would be best to ensure you get the assistance and advise appropriate to this matter."

etc. etc. Looks like I'll be giving them a call Monday afternoon once they're in the office.

In the mean time, what do you guys think? Is Royal Purple the best option to smooth out this shifting or would I be better off with another brand of 75w-90?

Sounds like they don't want to give you anything in writing.

That's what I was thinking. I'm going to see what they say when I call, and then ask for written proof. If they're willing to say over the phone that it's okay, they should have no issue putting it in writing. If they have an issue with that, I'll take it up the chain.

I used this stuff from GM and it helped a lot. It's GM fluid so no warranty worries.

Thanks for the info. Even though it's GM fluid, I'd still be skeptical of them trying to skip out of a warranty claim simply because it's not the fluid listed in the manual.

There are many of us with sync issues and after many trips to the dealer my '11 2SS M6 blew up. Dealer had it for 38 days. When I got it back, drove for a while and put RP in it...it was like butter.
