Unhappy Flat Black Stripe Discoloration

Anyone else seen this? I got the car & stripes - the standard, flat black ones you order with the car - in mid-June. The stripes were installed by a pro shop, contracted out by the dealership, and looked great. This could have been developing for some time, but I just noticed last week after having some body work done at the dealership (on the fender, nowhere near the stripes - don't ask :(), where I was giving the car extra scrutiny. They'd failed to adequately clean off all their masking spray, and that's what I thought this was, but it's not. The body shop guys are pretty sure it's a problem in the stripes themselves, and I believe them. The body shop manager is going to see if he can get this replaced under warranty.

I realize there is wax residue around the stripes from where the body shop waxed it, but this is not wax. The bigger, white flecks in the photos are wax, so please disregard.

I used Zaino on the whole car, including the stripes, but just once. That was also three months ago, and this is just now starting to become noticeable. Secondly, it's hard to tell in the pics, but the portion of the stripe on the spoiler is fine - almost like the vinyl is reacting to heat/sunlight, which the horizontal surfaces would see more of. The spoiler also got Zaino'ed, so that's another indication that it's not the cause.

Talked to the body shop guy today - he says they just got a new GM regional rep, who would need to be involved, so it could be a little while...

Have you waxed that? It looks like wax residue. I bet it's fixable

See post above - the spoiler also got Zaino'ed, and the stripes there are fine. Yes, the body shop waxed it, but this was there before they did that.

That was my first thought. I took it back to the bodyshop twice for this - what I thought was overspray, was actually masking spray, and you could feel it over the whole car. I could also rub it off with a fingernail. They took care of that. The surface of the car - including the stripes - is totally smooth.

Thanks for your replies~

Mine looks exactly like yours, except worse. Any verdict from the dealer on this yet? Do they plan to replace these?

My stripes were waxed, and I think that may be the issue. It almost looks like sunlight fading... just curious if I destroyed my stripes or not :-s

Have them removed and get them Painted/Clear-coated on and you will not have these problems ....

I had the vinyl matte stripes installed and regretted it and had the Dealership removed them and had them Painted/Clear-coated on with not regret, I'm very happy with the out come ...

If you can't wax the matte black stripes, how can a person wax around them to make sure at least the body color gets waxed and none gets on the stripes?

I had the same discoloration on my stripes after I waxed them . The guy who was detailing my car used this stuff and it looked great.
