Why do you think GM made the engine choices it did?

It seems all the aftermarket guys know something GM doesn't, The V6 could be touting 350hp had GM added CAI, Full length headers and a Highflow cat. With lighter better exhaust the V6 would have no matches in it's class.

Do you think they did that for the fuel economy just to reach that EPA 29mpgs?

production costs for the list of things you put up there, the items they used were cheaper to produce. This engine is not new, has been out in the land of oz for a few years before they started using them in the cts on 08'. Very little developement needs there, just get it into a new carriage and go, base engine has over 300hp, who would complain?

Production and cheaper costs for sure. I don't think now is the time to create a car just for the sake of making it - an auto company especially GM would need something efficient and economic for them and for the consumer.

They would have had to increase the msrp by at least $1,500 to add what you suggest. They are trying to keep the price as low as possible and it's a great car for the money. 312hp from the factory on a V6 is amazing for the price. For those who want to mod, you're able to, but for the avarage driver 312hp is more than enough.

Probably, but they are making these cars for the masses. Just as easy for the individual that wants it to add after the purchase. It's all about cost and making a quality car as inexpensive as possible.

You're getting some good answers in here...it boils down to a few things:

Cost -- cost of the car, cost of validation for all those new parts, etc
Emissions -- LT headers are illegal in California, iirc, and they tend to lower the emissions efficiency of the car
Longevity -- all these things have to live for a long time to merit a 5year/100,000mile warranty.

I'm sure there's more...but I don't work for them, unfortunately, so I can't think of anything else, at the moment. But I do think I can say that the aftermarket doesn't know anything GM doesn't about the engines they designed and built...the aftermarket just isn't hindered by regulations and durability concerns.

That it, after all...why there is an aftermarket!

The avarage person buying a V6 is probably not looking for another 15 hp on the V6. As stated 312hp for the average V6 driver is more than enough. JMHO.

Again my Taurus was a V6, I never thought about HP's, When someone buys a camaro their thougt process is a bit different and hp is apart of that process, you know this

I think your comment is true if they're buying the SS, not so sure the average V6 Camaro buyer is that concerned with hp, particulary when they already have 312. They are getting a really great looking car, with good fuel economy at a great price. Again, just my opinion.

you mean like spanking the 2010 Mustang & Dodge Challengers so bad they needed a whole new line of engines to compete?
