Weird Vibrating??? please help. please.

okay guys. i'm at 7k on my 1ss m6 and love it so far and haven't had any real trouble, until now. i go to leave my house and in first gear taking off, i feel the shifter vibrating and shaking vigorously, i was like wtf, so i went through 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and went to 5th and the shifter still shaking and vibrating horribly, then from what feels like under the car something starts vibrating and hitting and shaking the whole car, so i turn it around and hobbled home. what could be the cause of this vibration, hitting, and shaking??? i don't drive it hard, i'm at 18.2 mpg's with mixed city/highway driving. please help me guys. thanks.

Dealer inspection seems in order

Hi Jordan!

I regret to read of your trouble.

It is difficult, perhaps even impossible, to provide you with any reasonable advice without further details and having a good look at your car.

You need to get it serviced by qualified personnel at once before trying to drive it or to resolve the issue by yourself.

The one thing that I can think of which can cause a vibration like the shakes you are describing, even at very low speeds, is an unbalanced driveshaft.

Normally, the process of casting mass produced drivehafts do not result in a shaft with perfect even distribution of its metal mass along the length of the solid cylinder (the shaft) itself.

Before the drive shaft is installed at the assembly plant it is balanced by adding weights to it (just like balancing a wheel rim). There are different methods to afix these weights in order to prevent their separation from the shaft as it spins.

Aftermarkets driveshafts (like one from SLP which I had installed in my Firebird ) or driveshafts that are purpose manufactured for high end sports cars (Ferrari, Pagani Zonda, etc.) are precision casted/forged and therefore do not have balance weights.

I wonder if somehow you got a driveshaft in which the balancing weights were not perfectly attached and then fell/separated from it. Obviously this is an un-educated guess at best.

In any event I recommend again that you have the car towed to your dealership for inspection and proper diagnostic.

Incidentally: did you made any modification to the drive train and/or the transmission in your CAMARO??

Best luck with this problem.

Did you install a short throw shifter?

If so, check the dust boot under the car. The dust boot under the shifter may be loose an rubbing the driveshaft.

Vibration

Hi Jorden, if you have been driving in the snow you may have snow on the back side of your wheels and that can cause alot of vibration.

i live in south carolina, snow is a rarity around here. it hasn't snowed once, it sounded like someting under the car was vibrating and hitting the underside of the car, and the shifter was shaking and vibrating violently, which is about the best way i can put it.

So, you felt a horrible vibration and instead of stopping the car immediately, you continued to drive it through 4 more gears? You need to get it taken in and looked at. If you did lose anything from the driveshaft or where it connects to the tranmission or rear end, then it is going to be out of balance and cause the symptoms you describe. Whatever you do, do not drive it again until you figure it out.

I would call your dealer Monday morning and have it towed in. Don't drive it anymore until a dealer technician looks at it.

Can you post a pic of the piece your Grandfather found??

Hi Jordan!

Hope you could get an early apointment at your dealer service dept. and had the car towed to them already.

If you can, post a pic of the piece your Grandfather found.

My bet is that either the drive shaft has lost (a) its balance or (b) its alignment.

Sven86: Hello! Definitely get the car checked by your dealer service people asap. The V6 in the new CAMARO has a drive shaft made up of two different sections bolted together !!!!

GM did that with the previous generation V6 engined cars (CAMARO & FIREBIRD). However those were cars putting about 160hp to 220 hp with the stock 3.4L and 3.8L V6 engines of those days.

I do not undertand why was it decided to go the same path again since the new V6 CAMARO engine throws in excess of 300hp.

Perhaps your vibration is not driveshaft related but with that particular drive shaft unit it is better not to take any chances.

Best luck to you both,

The Flash

would wheels being out of balance cause the vibration?
