Question Replacing the TPMS

Is it possible to install the tpms on a set of wheels by yourself? OR will I need to take it to a wheel place to do it? How difficult would it be to get them off my current factory wheels and use them on a new set?

That is gonna be a tough one to get an answer on. Not sure anyone has had them apart themselves. Usually handled when tires are put on and they change the rubber washers (seals). I think you could do it yourself provided you had the parts... You might wanna head to the dealer and ask to see the microfiche for the TPMS and see the breakdown of the parts involved. That should give you a good idea if it's a DIY'er...

well

The Valve stems have to be replaced. They are about 7 dollars a piece at the dealer. (some tire shops carry this special valve stem, but most don't)

You dismount the tire first and the TPMS is attached to the valve stem with a torx head screw. Unscrew the torx head screw and the sensor can be removed. (new stems come with new screws)

When you pull the Valve stem out it is no longer usable.

Do not let the tire monkey pull the valve stem out before dismounting the tire, this will destroy the sensor. The sensors are about 60 dollars to replace.

As long as he relieves the pressure first it's ok though, right?

The way I read it, NO. They must dismount the tire first, then remove the sensor, then they can yank out the valve stem safely. They need to take care when dismounting the tire that it doesn't catch on the sensor as well....

Can you run the tires without sensors or will an error code pop up?

Tire must be deflated first, then at least the front bead must be broken to remove the sensor from the tire. You can run the car with the sensors removed, but the TPMS warning light will come on and stay on. If some dumb tire monkey ruins one of my sensors, you better believe his employer is going to pay to have it fixed at the dealer. My reasoning is if he ain't smart enough to get the tire off with out breaking a sensor, he ain't gonna be smart enough to replace it and program it.

I bought a set of sensors, I tried my hardest to get them installed in the wheel. I couldn't do it!

I took the sensor off and beat on it with a deep well socket. I lubricated the seal as best as I could. I felt at this point I was going to break something, so I put the sensor back on and took the new set of wheels, tpms sensors and the summer tires to the dealer.

The dealership was pretty impressed that I was able to get inside bead onto the wheels though.

It's easier if you have the right tool.

Coop 2010 says it best:

You NEED TO BUY NEW VALVE Stems even if you plan to use the existing Sensors...You're dealership should know exactly what you're talking about and they should have them in stock.

But the process is real simple.

Take wheel/tire off car
Deflate tire
Remove tire from wheel
Remove sensor from valve stem (little torx screw - you'll see it)
Old Valve Stems will remain on wheel (which is nice if you or someone ever plan on using them again)
Take new valve stems you bought from your Chevy dealer, pop them into new wheels
Screw on old sensors onto new wheels (little torx screw - you've seen it)
Tire onto wheel...over-inflate to seat beads, then deflate down to proper pressure
Wheel/tire onto car

And then let the car "relearn" the new tire pressure. Start with front left wheel...

SIMPLE? Simple!

(DONT FORGET TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT LUG NUTS TO WORK WITH YOUR NEW WHEELS!)

No, you cannot replace the TPMS sensors without removing the tire first. As stated already, the rubber stems are only meant for 1-time use, and must be replaced. They tend to get damaged when you remove them from the wheel. Reusing them most likely will end up with leaking air from the stems.

I sell new TPMS sensors with billet aluminum stems for $35 each plus shipping. Nicer quality stuff than the OEM rubber junk.

Sorry, that won't work. Two different types of sensor bodies and stem mounting methods.
