Obsolete Technology? You decide.

Just an observation I made and wanted to see what everyone's opinion on the subject is.

I've owned my Camaro for about 3 weeks now and up until recently never really payed much attention to the CD slot on the radio. I never use CD's so it really serves no purpose to me. But it got me thinking...

How many people really still use CD's versus those who strictly use their MP3 player, Ipod, cell phone, or USB thumb drive for music?

I have an Ipod Classic 120GB that holds all my music and I keep it tucked away in the center console storage area so its not cluttering up the inside of my car.

Do you feel that CD's are quickly going to suffer the same fate as records? Clunky and more of an inconvenience than what there worth?

CD's cost money and could add up quickly depending on how much variety you like to have in your music. I know a lot of people who download music for free for their MP3 player.

Feel free to discuss.

On an unrelated note-- I didn't want to start an entire new thread just for this, but thought I'd mention it. I see a lot of people who complain that the DRL's are always on...but my Camaro has a power switch which turns off automatic headlights and DRL's if used during the day time. Doesn't anyone else have this??

My buddy has an '03 car maybe even '04 not positive, with a tape player. Yes CDs will eventually become obsolete, just like every other form of media. Something smaller and better always comes a long, but its up to the public to adopt it.

Vinyl's been around for decades, some people still swear by them. Everything moves over for something else though. I'm still old school with cd's but I do have a 4G mp3 player that holds a buttload of music.

I still use CDs as a disposable source of data transfer (pictures etc that I can just email a disc or drop it off)...but 95% my music comes from friends/relatives or online stores.

I have some CDs from 5 or so years ago I still use in my car...but that's only because I haven't taken the 5 minutes necessary to go buy a $3 cable for my mp3 player. Everything's duplicated on my computer and player.

So...yeah -- I think it's only a matter of time before the CD and that slot in the car goes the way of the dinosaur.

EDIT: I mean...for cripe's sake -- there's a little chip in my phone (miniSD) about no bigger than my fingernail...and it holds 1000s of songs!!! A CD will hold...15? Maybe 20 small ones?

I listen to XM radio and CD's. I don't need an iPod/music everywhere I go like when

I was a young punk. I like PEACE and QUIET most of the time. When I want good

clean sound I put in a good clean CD. I wish this car had the 5.1 DVD Audio

like my Acura had. But it does sound great with a CLEAN CD. And my new sub.

DDD CD's sound awesome.

I don't listen to CD's very often. I mainly listen to XM in this car. I think you may be onto something though, I work for a company that repairs and installs jukeboxes. We are phasing out CD jukeboxes and moving into internet(hard drive) jukeboxes. As for the off switch, we all have it, I just think that some of us would like the halos to be on instead of the "fog lights".

Thanks to those who responded, all very interesting points.

My mother still has a record player that she's had since her wedding day (it was a gift). She never uses it though so it's cool to hear that some people still do use them.

I think I would use CD's a lot more if the Camaro had sufficient storage space for them.

Just a thought, but I know that you can buy blank DVD RW's for movies that can hold a few gigs of data if not much more. Is it possible to burn music to these and maybe have a few hundred songs all on one disc?? That's probably the only way I'd ever use a CD in the car because I don't plan on buying any anytime soon just for the 10-15 or so songs that they hold. Not worth the $8 or however much a new CD cost in my opinion.

I have all my music on a flashdrive or on my phone... I agree that the CD will go the way of the 8-track, the Cassette tape, etc.....

I tried the burn MP3 / WMA to DVD to see if it would play in the Camaro. Won't...tried several different DVD formats but no luck. You can burn MP3 and WMA files to a CD and they will play.

I too like to use CD's as a form of "security". They are always n the car, so I never forget them. And if they get beat up or stolen, no lose!

Man that sucks, it would be cool to have most of my entire music library on a CD lol

I kind of expected that it wouldn't work though. Oh well at least my Ipod won't go to waste...

That sir, is an excellent point that I've never considered...

Maybe it's time to make space for those CD's in my car now.

And you can burn MP3's so you get the efficiency of an ipod and the disposability of a CD!
