Got Pulled Over :(

So yesterday my wife and I take a trip out to Newton NJ to see a friend and his family. We live in Middlesex so it's around an hour and 20 minutes away. I took 206 all the way out there. I really hate 206 lol. So we spend the day out there and start driving back. This time I plan on taking rt 15 rather then 206. So I find my way out to tr 15. Mind you it has been a good 15 years since I have been on rt 15. I'm in the left lane behind a few cars. Going the same speed as them. Doing around 60 in a 50. I look in my rear view and the car behind me looks like a cop car. So I change lanes in case he wants to go passed me. As I switch lanes so does he and the lights go on :(. I pull right over where the road is nice and clear. I turn on my inside lights. I installed foot well lights that are tapped into the dome light so the inside of the car is now bright enough to see everything. I take out my reg and insurance card. As he was getting out of his car. I put kept my hands on the wheel till he got to the car to make sure he could see them. I did this because I know it's hard to see inside the car. I wanted to make sure he knew where my hands were. I handed him them when he asked for them. As he stood there I looked for my Dl. He tells he me the reason he pulled me over (I'm thinking no front plate) is I was doing 61 in a 40 (uggg). I tell him that I am sorry and explain that I was coming from a friends and stayed latter then I though. I explain to him that I did not know that is was a 40 zone and that I thought it was a 50. He tells me how one part is 40 due to car crashes. I apologize to him and explain nicely that I really did not know. He seen all my PBA cards in my wallet and I explain to him that I help out my brother with police towing in my area and that I did not have this years card with my. I only had the last 6 years haha. He asked about my driving record. I tell him it is clean. No tickets. He returns make to the his car. Now mind you I was speeding, I have no front plate, my tail lights are tinted, and I never wear a seatbelt. As time goes by he is still in his car. I look at my wife and say he is taking to long so I know he is writing a ticket :(. He comes back with my paper work and a ticket. He tells my that he is not giving me a ticket for 61 in a 40 because it would be 4 points. He tells my instead his he giving me a ticket for unclear plates because the frame on my back plate is coving part of the New Jersey on my plate. I apologized again and thanked him for not writing the speeding ticket. The key things here are I pulled over where he was safe, I made sure my car was well lit before he got out of his car, I made sure he could see my hands, I was very polite, I was honest, and I didn't try to BS him.

Thats exactly how to handle that situation... They really do just want the revenue unless you are being reckless.... so being polite will usally get you a non point ticket....

nice

yeah cops are not as bad as people make them out to be. Got a lot of cops buddies and close family friends and all you have to do is show respect and they take it easy. Its the loud mouth, trow a fit people that get the ticket and continue the circle of hate. But yeah all the things you did sound good ill try and remember that if i get pulled over may help!

That sucks, i got the new plate cover too and noticed it covers up 1/2 of the NJ at the bottom, i may take it off now!

Yeah my wife bought a plate frame for her car. It's the same one she bought for me. Now she said she doesn't want it on. Funny thing is when I put it on my brother even told me I could get a ticket for it.

Sorry to hear. Glad you got off easy though.

It's been three years since I've been pulled over. Hate to jinx myself though.

Also, sorry I didn't get to say bye on Saturday, but it was good to meet and talk to you. See you at the next meet!

It's all good. There were a lot of cars and people up there. Was hard to talk to all. I'm thinking about taking to trip to NY on Sunday. I figure the NY guys were nice enough to take trip out here . Plus I go in for my surgery on the 27th. Sunday might be the last meet I can make for a few months :(.

Yeah if you are just speeding and not driving reckless, it is all about the revenue to most officers. This is good because it is not a moving violation. so it won't effect your DL.

BTW, nice Avatar! :p

being that is what i use to do before i got promoted, if you are nice and polite most of the time the cop will not give you a ticket, if he has to it will be for something small and silly, moral of the story be nice and polite i used to love giving angry and rude people tickets, made me laugh. oh and about the revenue, no cop cares about how much a ticket is or how much money they bring in, it is a requirment of the job and they must be issued

Didn't know covering up N.J. was an offense.
