GM should have waited?!

I just heard an intersting theory by the Car Guy on AM Radio. He opined that GM should have waited to reveal the Camaro, this January when they were actually ready to build them intead of doing it in 2005. Can you imagine the excitement?

Besides, on a side note we all could have been alot more productive doing actual work instead of constantly visiting the insanely addictive Camaro5.com.

Many users would have just gotten something else in the meantime if they hadn't known of the Camaro. GM will get a nice influx of sales in February because they revealed it early.

I think they needed to gauge interest like all auto manufacturers by showing a concept. If it's a hit, it's a build. If it tanks, no one really loses. If GM would have waited, I'd have a G8 GT sitting in my garage. No real big deal since GM would still get my money. But, that would have been one less Camaro sold in this piss poor economy. I'd say you could multiply that by quite a bit and the 'newly' released Camaro might have been a hit, but would have tanked again due to lacking sales.

Yeah...my excitement would be through the roof. But, I'd be pretty sad knowing that I could not get one.

From a marketing standpoint, I think GM did the right thing. Their initial purchase count will be higher as a result.

NOW, can you imagine the elevated level of excitement from us enthusiasts if the announcement would have come in January? People like my wife are excited as can be but have to supress her thoughts from keeping herself from going insane over the wait.

Now come on....tell the truth....you would have traded or sold that G8 GT as soon as you heard the news!

When they popped it out in January of '06 for the first time...it really was just a concept; nobody anticipated the reception it got ...in response, they decided to build it.

....That doesn't count as early.

They would have missed out on all the early pre-orders that have already happened.. Anyways, then the Camaro wouldn't have been in Transformers either.. Your theory would have pretty much doomed the Camaro from the start in this current climate being more expensive than the Mustang..

Had they of waited I too would have something else...well, would have been buying something else this year!

I bought my Saab in Oct 05 (2006 model)...I was planning on trading it in this year and the G8 GT is what had my attention...no Camaro meant a new G8 GT this coming hear for me!

But now it will be a Camaro SS!

Car manufacturers generally don't want to reveal updated designs of existing car models too early, for fear of sales plummeting on the current model due to customers choosing to wait for the new style. This happened to the Mustang in 2004 (the only year rebates were offered on the SVT Cobra model). Everyone knew the 2005 Mustang was going to be retro-style and many passed on the 2004 Mustangs in order to wait for the 2005s.

The Camaro didn't have this concern. There was no current Camaro model in production. In fact, by putting the word out early they might get people who would have bought Mustangs (or other brands) to wait for the release of the Camaro instead. Maybe some of you even fit this category.

on both statements.

it was introduced as a concept. everyone loved it. and based on the reaction of the public, they decided to build it.

If they'd waited I would be stuck in another car now. Probably would have gotten one a year or so ago. I'd probably be too upside down to trade it on a new Camaro when they come out.

As it worked out, I decided to stick with my boring put-put until the Camaro came out. Giving myself a chance to be even on the loan/value at worst. Though I'm still mulling over the idea of trying to keep the put-put as my daily driver...
