V6: 304 vs. 312

I was under the impression that the 2010 V6 was 304hp and the 2011 was 312hp. Then I see some people in their signatures and under their avatar "2010 v6 312hp".

I found the GM press release here

Horsepower increase for V6 engine

The 2011 Camaro V-6 engine completed SAE certification testing and is now officially rated at 312 horsepower at 6500 rpm and 278 lb-ft of torque at 5100 rpm. This rating is eight horsepower higher than the previous year and also marks an increase in torque from the 2010 rating of 273 lb-ft.

“The 304 horsepower in the 2010 Camaro was actually a conservative rating on our end,” said Tom Sutter, GM V-6 chief engineer. “But we knew already that this award-winning engine produced at least the amount of power we stated, but now we’ve gone the extra step in certifying the engine for this application and have verified an additional 8 horsepower.”

So was there literally no changes or alterations in the engine? So doesn't this mean that all 5th Generation Camaro V6ers have 312HP?

Yes, they guesstimated the 304. And then in 2011 they decided to get it certified, so it got tested and it was decided to have 312 hp

Sweet. Alright, so I'm not crazy. I just didn't know that it had not been certified for the 2010 model. Balls to the walls then.

They didn't "guesstimate". Multi-billion dollar compainies don't "guesstimate" specs. They took the output of the CTS which is the same engine so they assumed the same. I guess they made a tweak or two before dropping it in the Camaro so once they got around to certifying it... it was 312...

You're only crazy for thinking that extra 8 HP is going to make a difference!

Hahahaha. This was originally because I was going to get a plaque made up for the hood/dash and wanted concrete facts.

Don't worry; there plenty of HP in this humble abode.

Oh, and the % is higher when the rating is lower; so it makes a bigger difference in a lower hp car. Kinda just insulted myself; but I'm totally okay with that.

So what do you call it when you, instead of getting it certified, you drop an engine in and use specs from when it was in a different car?

Hmm....

I'm sure they did a lot of dynoing, so they knew what the actual HP was... at the time GM was in Bankruptcy so they opted not to do the actual SAE certification which cost a LOT of money... so basically they knew the HP, but simply didn't want to spend a ton of money for the SAE paperwork...

I agree with you scrming

The guy earlier made sure to comment on my "guesstimate" comment by saying that "They took the output of the CTS which is the same engine so they assumed the same."

Also, not sure why, but on the official specs/dyno graph released by GM, the V6 shows 313 HP.

I didn't know intake and exhaust alone would get you to 330hp! Nice!
