Richmond Gear Quality

I know many folks here have Richmond gears and I've seen a few sets of them shredded. So I thought I'd tally up just how good/bad they are.

These modern gears are very quiet. Whine can be greatly influenced by the gear install and other parts installed on the car.

I wouldn't put Richmond gears in my car even if I got them for free.

I'm asking because I just installed a new set of 4.11 Richmond gears and they're whining at 50-60mph range.

I've installed OEM gears in Ford 9", older 12-bolt GM's, and Dana 60's and I've always been able to set them up to be quiet. Not so with these 4.11's. I even installed them twice, the first time I set them up I got a perfect tooth contact pattern (indicator of pinion depth) and backlash within tolerance. The second time I decided to try setting the pinion depth exactly to the specification (ignoring the contact pattern); I was able to get it within 0.001" and the backlash again within spec and they still whine.

Yes, I used a case spreader.

Both could be contributed to poor install and/or break in. Also, Richmond did have issues with the 4.10s. A lot of factors goes into this but I have yet to hear a set of 4.11s breaking.

For some reason I thought Richmond was a good quality gear set. I guess not.
