Cool FUEL OCTANE FOR THE SS ..

Well guys and gals, did a little experiment with the premium fuels you can put in your SS Camaros. 2 weeks ago I filled up with Sunoco 91 octane to see if it made any difference in the performance of the car and it did. I noticed the car loosing some of it's pep after about a half tank was run through it, ran it way down and filled back up with Sunoco 93 which is what I always use anyway, ran 2 tank fulls through it and the performance did NOT pick back up like it was, seemed real sluggish still from the 91 so I did the fuse pull last night before I went to bed, put them back in this morning and going to work this morning and after work this afternoon I had my screamer back. Car runs like a scalded ape again, love it. I didn't think 2 points on the octane scale would make a difference, but it did in my case. The owners manual says premium fuel, so I guess that means 93, not 91.Have fun ..Enjoy the ride..

Wow... I didnt know that 91 octane could make it revert to the low octane table. (thats what its called right?)

I wouldn't have thought so either, but seems as though it did. I'll never do that again..And no, it's not BS..

It all depends how old the gas in the storage tank at the station was too. The longer it sits, the more octane it loses, as well as losing some volatility.

I gas up at a busy station, it is right off of the interstate and is almost always getting new fuel.So I know it doesn't sit too long..

I'm gonna say outside temps and humidity had a bigger play in this than the octane. especially since you are in FL.

The temps and the humidity have been the same down here for the last 3 weeks, low to mid 90's and 40-60% humidity, every day, I am a weather watcher as I go fishing all the time and this play a factor in how the fish are going to bite..

I don't think so, but thanks..I am not new to the muscle car world, used to have 2 old school cars which were effected the same way by fuel octane, 1969 Camaro w/ 327, and a 1972 Dodge Challenger 340 4bbl..

Well my dealer dumped a full tank of 87 in my car upon delivery. The salesman had no idea about the octane tables in the car so I ran that entire tank of regular, filled up with 93 and ran that down to 1/4 tank then did the fuse pull and went 2 miles to the gas station and filled up with 93 octane again.

Does this work? You bet your a$$. Once I did the fuse pull the tires started to spin at around 3k rpm.

I have since pointed my salesguy to this site so that other new owners don't go through this pain.

What I still don't know is if the octane table reset issue has been fixed in the new cars. Mine was made in June 2011 so I haven't been able to find out if the octane table will automagically flip after a while. Does anyone know the status of this?

My 2ss is stock (a CAI Inc) and the stations here in west texas mostly have 91 octane. I know of one station that says 92 octane. We went into new mexico and the super said 90 octane, had no choice needed fuel. I envy you guys who can find 93 octane on a regular basis. Was considering a jannetty tune some day and have serious questions concerning asking for a 91 or 93 tune. Just thinking-slowly-slowly
