Key Programming

Hi, I already posted in response to another thread related to this topic, but I need help. What are some less expensive ways to get a replacement key programmed? My new key (cut, but not yet programmed) will start the car (if I use the original key first) but leaves the security lock symbol lit on the speedo gauge. Also, the lock/unlock/trunk buttons don't function (as you might expect from an un-programmed remote).

My efforts so far to have the Camaro auto-program the key for me by following this sequence hasn't panned out as well as I had hoped :(

Thoughts anyone?

I would just loke a key that can unlock my door in a emergency.

if you have one key programmed incert it in to the ignition and turn to the on position, remove it and incert the unprogrammed one and turn to the on position. at this point you should read a message on the DIC that reads "Key #_ programmed" and voila your done

This is really great information. I followed the instructions, but no luck. I guess that my new FOB is not working. Thanks for your help.

alanmeyer, you may want to have your second key and fob checked to make sure they are working properly and you should be able to have the key programmed if you'd like. Unfortunately the owners manual doesn't show any information on programming the keys other than having your dealer perform the work. I'm sorry I couldn't be of better assistance to you in this matter.

Thanks Jeff. I'm going to have the key programmed -- either by a dealer or by a locksmith. My closest dealer wants about $90, but perhaps I can find another dealer that will do it cheaper, or perhaps I can use a locksmith instead.

This worked for me. You should try it again. Maybe you have to have the doors closed.

Thanks. I tried this several times, but no luck. The doors were always closed when I tried.

Also, I would buy another FOB from GM, but I've already had this key cut. I wish there was a way to swap the key portion of the FOB only -- I don't think that it's possible without disfiguring or damaging the FOB :(

I got to tell ya......if I bought a new key/fob, and the dealership cut the key for me and didn't program it for NO ADDITIONAL FEE......I don't care how far I would have to drive, I would find another dealer to deal with as the one you have now isn't worth a CRAP. I had one of my fobs go bad on my other GM car....when it came in, they cut it and when I came in to pick it up, they programed it right then and there for NOTHING.

if you have your old fob, thats possible. you can pry it apart and swap them out.....I've seen it done at the dealer....its how they get at the battery as well to replace them.

The dealership doesn't cut the key. It has to be ordered. I picked mine up from the parts department and programmed it in the parking lot. Only took a few seconds.

I was going to say 80-90 to have it programmed at dealer, but you already have it there. Take it to the dealer, it will be done right.
