Gearing
Forgive me if already addressed but is it just me that gets the feeling like my M6 car could use a little taller gearing?? It just feels like 1st gear is more like a granny gear, makes me almost want to take off in 2nd but its too tall. 6th at highway speeds could use a couple hundred drop in rpms also. If I feel like this now I wonder how I'll feel after doing some major mods and gaining a lot of HP. (ADM) Anyone know of anybody who has addressed this or am I just nuts??

you could drop in the auto rear end... that would make the gears a lot taller! and would probably give you top speed in fifth. Not sure what the acceleration would do...
(also not sure if this is possible/feasible) Stock manual at 6200rpm 1st 52.8 2nd 78.9 3rd 108.1 4th 140.5 5th 175.6 6th 223.0 reverse 48.4 (final drive ratio is 3.73) with auto rear end: 1st 61.0 2nd 91.1 3rd 124.8 4th 162.2 5th 202.8 6th 257.5 reverse 55.9 (final drive ratio is 3.23) |

That's what I was wondering. If there are any halfway options out there. A friend of mine who runs Prostock mentioned he once geared his a little taller when he discovered that his car actually run a couple of tenths faster when he took off in 2nd. After he re-geared it (4speed) he would drag as a 3 speed and use 4th as highway gear. I just figured it wouldn't hurt to ask around I'm just thinking out loud with my fingers today.
I may not be smart but I'm always thinking. |

I put the zl1 rear in my SS about 2 months ago. As of then there were no gear options. Just stock 3.73, and 3.23.

I'm in the same boat (zl1 m6). looking for a way to make 1st a little more useful with 700hp to the wheels and make 6th a little better on mileage for long distance cruising.

The best option would be to re-gear the transmission. Check with RPM Transmissions or Tick Performance to see if they have that option. They both specialize in building hi-perf manual transmissions. At 700 rwhp I hope you're not running regular street tires; but running a taller rear tire could help as well. You would be need to recalibrate the speedo which is not that hard with tuning software.

i think the auto rear end would be a neat option. What do y'all think would happen to the 0-60 and 1/4 times??

This was a pretty good thread explaining the different ratios, pros and cons etc.
