Arrow How have you mounted your radar detector?

Hey everyone,

I'm sure that some of you guys have radar detectors and I've been considering getting one. My main concern, however, is the power source. It just seems like a bit of a distance to the 12V outlet for a detector that's located all the way up on the dash. So, before I buy one, how have you guys mounted your detectors? Pictures would be awesome! Also, have any of you just gone with a battery-powered option? If so, what do you think of it?

Thanks,
Gotadime

I used this for the mount: http://www.southerncarparts.com/cama...nt-p-2653.html

It took about 20 minutes to run the wire to the fuse box for power. Get a fuse tap (http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...D_A%7CGRP2020A____) at any autoparts store (be sure to get the correct size for your car fuse) for power in the fuse box that has power only when the key is on. You can run the wire in the headliner. Feel up in the front of it and you will feel a gap. Then run the wire in the front left ceiling structure arm to your fuse box. Its not hard to feed it and you do not have to take it apart. There is a screw or 2 above the fuse area that makes great grounds.

I hope this helps!!

There's a thread about a V-1 being mounted below the rear view mirror and using it for a power source. I plan on going that route when I get mine. I just wish the dang thing wasn't $400!

Haha, yeah I might just end up doing that. We'll see.

Yep, I've seen that thread. I wish it wasn't $400 too.

I'm using the suction cups that came with the detector, right on the windshield to the right of the rear view mirror. Power cord goes straight down to the lighter and is just to the right of all the instrumentation, guages and controls.

So I'm assuming that it doesn't interfere with the temp controls on the right then, which was my only fear. I'll probably try this setup and see where it takes me:

Detector: Beltronics V940

Mount: This thing...

Trying to keep it economical and nice. They both have solid reviews.

Have a visor clip on mine, using an escort. It's up high hard to see from the outside. Ran the power cord down the window molding directly to the fuse box, clean that way.

Check out this thread.
http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34844
It shows both the set up using the overhead power sources available, as well as how to use the fuse tap. I will probably use an overhead source. I have my detector (an older Bel 9## something or other that's a few years old) mounted to the lower left of the rear view mirror, inline with the OnStar controls basically.

Radar detectors are only illegal in a few states (Virgina and DC as memory serves).

One of the fuse boxes is to the left of the driver. You open the door and look toward the steering wheel. Inside the flat part that faces you is a fuse box.

I have my Valentine 1 on my drivers visor, hardwired to the drivers side fuse box. You can keep an eye on it when the music is cranked up. You can turn it off easily and can't see it when looking in the drivers window. Where I am if they see and hear your detector, you are guaranteed a ticket.

Don't mount it, have it 'installed.' The Passport folks can install it so even the controls are hidden (as well as the controls for the accompanying Blinder Xtreme laser jammer). Much better option.
