Damn rodents - chewing the engine cover

Here's a new one...I was showing off my car to a neighbor, and when I opened the hood, I noticed that the left side of the clothy, felty, aft engine cover looked like it was chaffed or something. I don't have the plastic engine cover on, so I thought that part in the back must have been rubbing up against something. But glancing at the underside of the hood, I realized there wasn't anything for it to rub against, as nothing up there looked worn out.

Upon closer inspection, I realized it wasn't just a bit worn down, but there was actually a deep chunk missing! It's about four inches by two inches but 1/2inch deep. I can only assume that something was crawling around in the engine compartment scratching away at that cover! WTF!!! And this is after a few weeks ago when I changed my wife's oil in here Malibu that I found a shat load of acorn shells on to top of her engine.

I miss my old neighbor (rest his soul) who used to catch the squirrels and chipmunks and put them out of our misery.

I don't know what to make of this, but I guess that material will make a great nest for some little rodent. I only wish we let the cat out (but then I guess I would have paw prints on my ride, lol).

One of the little peckers built a nest under the engine cover of my Cobalt...and I was cleaning out all the nuts/grass, etc sitting on top of the engine...I found the #2 injector wire had been gnawed on!!!

Chewing on the wires? Damn, I guess I'll check that too when I'm taking the picture. I'll check the wife's car too.

Luckily...there was no real damage. The insulation was just chewed away right at the connector. A little wipe down and some electrical tape cured all.

My brother used to live in the city area of Baltimore. He always had to deal with mice crawling around his mustang and getting up into the engine and pooping all over it. It drove him insane! he put all kinds of traps out. Spring traps, glue traps it didn't matter there were so many and they were tough mothers! He found one that had been squished in a trap that had dragged itself all around the car. It looked like a murder scene (well I guess it kinda was) He was happy to buy a nicer house in a good area with a garage so he never had to deal with that again.

Happened to me last summer, some rodent crawled under the hood of my Alero and chewed all the way through 2 plug wires, and tore all the heat insulation off the underside of the hood in an attempt to make a nest. Fortunately, I was going to replace the wires anyway for a 100,000 miles tune up. Still makes me mad though.

I like to think the little vermin was sleeping between the halves of broken plug wire that morning I started it, or at least that the fox that was hanging around under our bushes that summer got it before the poison did.

Took some pics just now. This sucks. I've never had this problem before. And as I can see, many others have had it happen to them too. Little bastards!
