Insurance and Supercharger/Turbocharger
Wondering what if anything folks who have added a supercharger or turbocharger are doing as far as insurance goes. I had a fender bender a few weeks back and fortunately only damage was to the front bumper. I'm looking at superchargers so as I was going through the claims process I asked the adjuster (Allstate) what happens if I had added a supercharger or turbocharger and it was damaged in an accident. He said Allstate won't cover it. I called my agent and he confirmed that Allstate views engine modifications like superchargers as "racing equipment" and won't cover them. Allstate will let you add endorsements for expensive cosmetic mods (wheels, etc.) but not things that add horsepower.
The wreck I just had wasn't my fault...I was sitting at a stoplight and two cars collided in the middle of the intersection and one rebounded into me. My agent tells me that if I had a supercharger and it was damaged in that scenario then my only recourse is to sue the other two drivers for the cost of fixing/replacing the supercharger, Allstate would not be involved in that part they only would get my car back to stock. I can see that being a major pain. If the wreck is my fault I'm flat out of luck, Allstate will only pay to get the engine back to stock. I have called Hagerty's and they'll insure the car with a supercharger, surprisingly for not much more than I pay Allstate now, but only up to so many miles a year and while mine isn't a daily driver I don't want to be restricted to a certain number of miles that I can drive it. In poking around on other forums it seems most don't tell their insurance carriers and hope for the best if it's wrecked or stolen. That doesn't seem to be too smart a move to me though. Anyone have experience with an insurance carrier who will cover superchargers, etc. Is the best approach to not say anything, keep all the receipts and hope for the best if you have a claim? Thanks for any info.....

mine does but i insured as pleasure vehicle 7500 miles or less you said you did not want that also might check back with yours if you use an installer some installers are considered dealer install. meaning if you can purchase the car that way they can not say no. like a gt 500 shelby does the blower but sold as dealer install. most of your major installers lingerfelter, callaway, hennessey have dealers that sell their products the same way shelby does. If its factory they can not say no.

Just asked Mercury. They said they don't offer coverage for a blower.
They said the underwriters think people with blowers will go faster. :emoticon7: |

State Farm allows you to do "add-on's" for aftermarket upgrades incl. superchargers etc. I checked with them. (wa state if that matters).

+1 for Grundy.
Mine is not a daily driver as well, but they insured the agreed value on my Lingenfelter upgrades.

Haggerty will also insure it as a non daily driver, if it is highend. You can get delcalred value, so if you want 60K that's what you purchase. They have some other rules as well, just give them a call. It also wont insure accidents at the track.

Both parties must agree to value of the vehicle. You tell them what you think it's worth and they decide if they want to insure you. Believe it or not, mine was actually $200 LESS a year than what I was paying through another non-collector car insurance company.
