So what happens to insurance when you gain demerit points?

I gained some demerit points (3 speeding tickets in the same spot) a few months before insurance renewal was up, but our insurance never went up (I'm with TD insurance).

What happened to you (with regards to insurance) when you gained demerit points? Did you get away with it (no increase in rate)? Did you get called up by the insurance company a year later? 2 years later? Are you long-term good customers with the insurance company?

I'm just wondering if there is a pattern with how insurance companies in Canada treat speeding tickets.

thanks.

You gain demerit points - you don't loose them. They're bad - you don't want them.

I can't comment on your actual question

ooook..... then. I simply clarified something that is commonly misunderstood by many people. Relax.

I cannot speak to what your insurance company may or may not do. But I'd suggest a read of the part above your signature that talks about full disclosure. At that point you may wish to be careful what information is presented in a public forum.

3 tickets in the same spot? Hmmmm... good luck with that.

It takes time. The ticket has to go through the courts, enter the guilty plea, take the fine, blah blah blah, info. forwarded to MTO (if in Ontario) and then placed on your driving record and then finally that record reviewed by the insurance company. Simply put, I got 2 speeding tickets 3 years ago, 4 months apart. The one the officer never filed. The second he did, I pled (he gave me 10 over when he caught me doing 24, so ace for him) and my company just got it last year. The ticket comes off my insurance this year.

I didn't get any points. If you get points, you're f***ked in terms of insurance, unless they have a first time forgiveness policy. Knowing that points start at around 20 over, if you have 3 of those, you're pretty much in trouble.

Just wait, they won't call you. When you renew and they finally get it, they'll just mention that your rates changed because of it.

Sounds like you should invest in a radar detector.

I suggest you fight the tickets. After all, you weren't breaking the law.

Illegal in most Provinces and Territories in Canada. The last time I got caught with one, which was years ago, the Officer made me remove it from the car, place it behind the back wheel and back over it several times. The upside was, he didn't give me a ticket.

Years ago (early 80's), when I owned my last Camaro I accumulated 7 demerit points in about 4 months. 3 for get caught doing a burn out and 4 for speeding (2 tickets). I sold the car shortly there after to got back to school which was in the fall. The next spring I got a letter from the MTO requesting a personal interview and yes the insurance company did find out. They dropped me like a bad habit and was forced to go with a company that only offered facility rates. These are the companies that take the people no one else will insure. If memory serves me correctly, my rate went from about $450 a year to over $3000.

The other thing to keep in mind, when your policy renews you usually get an accompanying letter which basically place the onus on you to advise the insurance company of any changes in your information. Not sure if this includes tickets but it is their out. So if your in an accident and they start digging around and find out you had a number of tickets that they were not aware of, I think, don't quote me, that they can use this to deny any coverage.

Insurance Demystified:

Here's the response from my insurance company: for a married couple, they will allow up to 4 speeding tickets amongst the two before raising rates. I guess for an individual, two tickets are allowed before a rate increase.

There you go.

That's interesting.... I would assume that they adjust that for different penalties (eg. 15km over is no points vs. 30kms over = 4 points). I wonder how much it differs between companies
Thanks for posting what you found out.
