After going through all of that, I expect that by 2011 there will be a Gen 5 small block, 5.7L 400 hp DI AFM, possibly with VVT as well. This would give it probably 31-32 mpg highway. That would be base V8. Top V8 would be 6.2L with DI AFM rated at 475 hp .

The problem with the lighter/smaller engines is that GM would be tapping more potential from the engine and there would be less room for improvement.
I personally wouldn't mind because it'll be my first v8, but if people want to race them and completely soup up every last inch of the engine, they'll be VERY disappointed. Think an Integra/Civic with $15k into the engine. Turbo, exhaust, nitrous, etc. etc. That might keep up with a 2002 Camaro SS. Now think about doing the same mods to the SS. Not a chance in hell the Civic could keep up. This brings up the old saying "There's no replacement for displacement because you have a much bigger canvas to use. If the Camaro starts shrinking engine size/weight for more power they're basically getting closer to the engines max potential meaning there wouldn't be much you can do to make it faster aside from an engine swap. This is what someone from a Corvette forums and I were discussing at the M:TG states yesterday. |

I don't think I'd be comfortable doing any of those things to a stock motor, anyways. I'd have to forge it.So the alternative to that is getting a monster-power V8 stock from the factory.

Mindz the thing is, with DI you can start at a higher level and then build from there. Basically its just an ultra efficient version of fuel injection. figure if they are getting 450+ out of a 6.2L motor not designed for DI, they should easily get 400 out of a 5.7L designed for that tech. Now i would understand your point if you were going to add direct injection as a performance upgrade. But i doubt that very many would do that. You are very right though when it comes to engines like the LS7, or something that has forced induction from the factory or a number of other things. They don't allow much to be improved upon.
But think of it this way for smaller small blocks: if you have the same block dimensions but a smaller bore and stroke, that gives you more to work with not less.

the new Camaro will have a V gen motor in it why , think about it the Camaro is ALL NEW doesn't it make sense to include a ALL NEW motor with it to showcase it's technology. Of course it will have Direct Injection why because thats the future for
Gm it saves fuel and produces more HP . As for the Vette , we have to remember the Camaro won't be released till 2009 so the 2009 Vette could also very likely have a gen V motor in it producing say 450 to 475 HP and the Camaro a little detuned with restrictive exhaust roughly 430 to 450 HP anyways we will ALL soon find out at the 2008 100th Anniversary CHICAGO AUTO SHOW Fri. FEB 8 2008 were GM will be showcasing it's CAMARO PRODUCTION MODEL I can't wait.. gladiatoro (= |

If so happy birthday plus one week for me, buuuuuuuut I doubt it. Sad. And I wouldn't go so far as to say the Camaro will have a Gen V engine in it, but I definitely agree with the logic that if it is going to be an all new car, it would be the perfect opportunity to debut an all new engine class. I imagine the factors that would stop the Gen V from being offered would be timing (not ready in time) or cost.

Well they have to produce the plant for the Camaro still... and I beleive they require new facilities to make the new gen V blocks aswell.
Wouldn't this mean that the need to complete the production of the gen V plants first, to have a product to launch with the camaro? That means they'd have to produce two different facilities in less than a year. Assuming that they have the Camaro design finalized, it would be quite the rush. I wouldn't expect to see it @ launch. Hopefully 6 months later it'll show up with the 'vert. ![]() I'm strongly considering waiting for this engine before buying a Camaro - the added mileage would be of massive importance, and the added power is... well... "alright" I suppose. ![]() ![]() ![]() If they are planning to launch the Impala in the early 2010/2011 my guess will be it'll be the Gen V launch platform, which could potentially mean 3 years before release. I won't wait 3 years for my Camaro. |

Is anyone else confused about the above? Cause I thought the camaro was a gen V . . .
3whiterag can probably answer the block production question As for producing the Camaro, the plant exists but the place either has been gutted/is being gutted/is about to be gutted.

The engine generations are separate from the car generations. We're talking about the fifth generation of the small block Chevy engine. For example, the sixth generation Corvette uses a fourth generation Chevy small block. So we're looking at the production of a fifth generation Camaro and also a fifth generation engine family, but we don't know if the time frames will match up.
Is that what you were asking? |

Also...I can't go back in the article right now...but isn't it mentioned in there, that there aren't any MAJOR changes to the short block? I mean, maybe a retooling of the line would be necessary, but not a complete makeover.
Remeber, Oshawa isn't being completely refitted just because of the Camaro. IIRC, it's going to be a 'new-age' flex line. Meaning they can build multiple, different cars on the same line as each other. Very efficient design. But I 100% agree that maybe our beloved 3whiterag can shed some light on what 'would' need to be done to the/a plant 'if' GM was 'going to' produce the Gen-V engines... ![]() Oh, and a nice way to remember 5th generation engines v 5th generation Camaro: Gen-V. and 5th gen. the engine uses roman numerals. where as the car doesn't . Just how I differenciate myself.
