Ice/Snow damaged my paint? Whattttttt?

We got hit with a huge ice storm today, mostly this morning. I only cleaned it off my windows/windshields and let the rest either fall off while driving or slowly melt.

Well its all gone now and after stopping for gas tonight I noticed LOTS of new little scratches EVERYWHERE! I can't believe it!

This paint is so ridiculously fragile! Fortunately most are light and small enough that they will completely disappear with polish but wtf is my car going to look like 2-4 years from now?

I know my paint's flaws inside and out and these definitely seem to be caused by the ice.

Honestly, and sadly I think my next mod is going to be a paint job...screw an intake, screw exhaust. Those are really pointless if my paint looks ridiculous.
Hopefully I can find a good shop that will give me what is now basically an "old" school paint job. Meaning none of that water based bs.

Anyone else notice this or have the same problem with the winter killing paint?

If your car was outside for the ice storm today/last night check for me and see!

Sorry to hear about this, but for me my camaro has no idea what winter is.

Ice can do that to a great paint job as well.

You know I wasn't sure what the effects were of ice on paint but now I know. I feel like it shouldnt be that bad though.

Like you said a good cleaning as well as some nice wax and you should be golden. I hope that you had a coat of wax on it before the winter started?

I don't see any reason to repaint your car if wax / polish will fix it.

I had to park my car outside the parking garage at the airport, because it was full. When I returned home from my trip there was snow on the car and a small layer of ice underneath. I had no means of getting it off, except by hand. Lucky I had gloves. I carefully removed the snow while the car warmed up and heater going. When I started removing the layer from the roof a sheet of it came loose and slide off to the opposite side of where I was standing. I could not stop it. It left a scratch half way across the roof of the car and it is noticeable. I can polish it out, but that is going to reduce the layer of clearcoat. So, yeah, I know what you mean. I feel your pain. Right now, snow is my worst enemy.

Unfortunately that is the price of having ice sliding over the car when it melts. Ice contains a ton of dirt and grit in it along with the same dirt, grit & salt on your car. A sharp enough piece of ice can easily cut through your skin so no doubt it will scratch your paint all up. I lived in Michigan for 30yrs and every car i ever owned that i drove in winter had scratches all over it from ice.

Best you can do is keep it clean , waxed and polished.

my car has been consistantly out in the ice and snow and I inspected it after the last warm up and not a scratch that I could detect, I chip it off in chunks a few times but that is usually around the wind sheild.

Yup. The best protection against winter is a great detail right before the snow hits....I don't think this has anything to do with a perceived fragility to the paint.

Though....you shouldn't see gouges or anything horrible. Some hairline swirls and similar issues -- otherwise there's something beyond dirty ice at work, here.

I would take ice any day over the salt in the undercarriage. That is a losing affair all the way around. BTW... I am freezing here in So Cali...it is down in the mid 60's!
