Document Fees ???

Hey just a quick question, what are reasonable "document" fees for a dealership to charge when purchasing a new car? I am being quoted $250 for document prep and just don't want to get the shaft. I don't mind paying something for their service but don't want to "donate" either.

Thanks,

Cady

That's is a tough one, Cady. It depends on what side of the fence you're looking from. What are other dealers charging for the same thing? That has aways been my method of determining what's reasonable.

They are going to make their money somewhere. As long as you get a good overall deal, I don't see the difference. Are they giving you a decent discount off the sticker? Look at the big picture and don't sweat the details too much.

Mine was 55.00. Anything over 100.00 seams excessive...just my .02.

Doc Fees are nothing more than a covert way to add profit to the deal! Some dealers treat them like sales tax and don't even mention them until the final papers are prepared.

I'm all for the dealer making a fair mark-up/profit but Doc Fees keep the dealership experience in the same category as the used car lots that are known for sleezeball deals.

It's no different than if the dealer added a Property Tax Fee or an Electricity Fee.

But the Doc Fee practice has spread to all but the real class dealerships ---- so you have to decide if this insult ruins the bottom-line deal or not -- when compared to others.

That's the end of my rant

If you are getting the supplier discount they cannot charge more than $75. I wasn't paying enough attention and was charged $150. As said, it seems the lower the sale price goes the higher the doc fees go.

Well my dealer charged $250 for document fees but I got my synergy green 2ss that msrp'd for 38,800 for 36,500 so I didn't mind the fee too much. I was told that it is legal in Ohio for auto dealers to charge up to the $250.
