V6 Constraint
Does anybody know when the V6 is coming off constraint? Or does anyone have any idea?

"Soon..."
I talked to my dealer yesterday, and he said his GM rep had been in earlier and told him he didn't expect the V6 to be on constraint much longer. Also they expect the V6 constraint to be lifted before CGM - my dealer moved my order up to #2 (was #3) because customer #2 wants CGM. OK, for all I know it may be
but my dealer has been straight with me so far. He thinks I should get my car by late May/early June.

GM said that it would take about a month for the one-per-dealer cars to be built so therefore it would make sense that the constraint lasts a month. If that's the case, this week would be the last week of constraint and LS/LT orders would begin moving along next Thursday the 19th (actually getting submitted Tuesday the 24th).

I changed my order from 1LT/RS CGM to 1LT/RS BLACK just in case the V6 constraint is lifted before the CGM constraint. I agree they should be on constraint this week and maybe next week at the most.

Given that, wouldn't it be more stupid to *not* have at least one DRIVEABLE car on dealer's lots for everyone else? Think about it -- "Hi, you want a Camaro? Well, we have 11+ thousand enthusiast cars all piled up in the cue, so you'll have to wait about a month to even test drive one...oh, you won't buy a car you can't drive...:(...." I'm not ordering right now...so maybe I'm just not feeling the mounting frustration and anxiety like you are...but I see this decision as a smart one, with unfortunate side-effects...

"Hey do you want to test drive this shiny new showroom camaro? okay!
What?!?! you want to buy one? well i'll just have to put you on the list, we are still only getting sold orders in.." what's the point of a showroom car when they can't buy one off the lot?

The plain truth is the way they went about it could have been handled better. I'm fine with constraining cars so they can build the dealer cars. I just think they should have done an even constraint split across sold V6 orders and V8 orders. Or not done a constraint at all and just limited dealer allocations.

The only problem with that is that most of the orders are for V8's and GM was planning on a 50/50 build. In order to make sure they use the supplies they have, they decided to add an extra 5,000 V6's for the dealers to even the ration back out to 50/50. It's efficiency, that's all.

I think this a good move by GM. They will sell many more Camaros if the general public can see then and sit in them at dealerships. Yes you could argue that when people see these cars on the road that is as good of an ad as anything. However by building the V8's first people will see the performance of the Camaro, and hopefully will go to a dealer to check one out. Most of these people would not buy a car they have not sat in or test drove, so GM would lose a lot of business here. Also the V6 looks a lot better on paper (or the vehicle info sheet taped to the window) than the V8 to the common consumer primarily due to the mileage, while still having a respectable 300 horses. The constraint won't last much longer so just keep the faith for another 2 weeks or so, in the scope of things that really isnt that long considering how long many of us have waited. And don't tell me GM is lying to you or tricking you by making dealer cars first, they never said anything about that other than you should have your car by Sept 09. So they can order one! I know a fair number of people who never would buy a lot car even if it is pretty close to what they want since it has probably been "abused" through test drives and such. True many people may be put off when they learn that if they ordered when to go to their local Chevy dealer that they won't get their car for a good 6 months at least, but raking in the customers that will wait is better than none. |

Dealers won't be hanging onto these cars letting customers test drive them. They'll be sold to the first person that offers them a boatload of cash.
