BTW, I have decided to have my motor forged this winter partly based on this thread. It's going to spend next winter in the shop instead of covered in my garage.

Long term reliability sure. But forged or not if the cam turns like this, it's gonna fail big time.

I dont care what your engine is made of, if the cam doesn't turn with the crank, nothing will save the motor. Especially at higher RPM.

I agree. He had a one bolt cam, right? My cam is a three bolt cam. There are a few things that did go in this motor that might not have had the engine been forged.

To clarify, I don't think this engine was in the hp range to really justify forging the motor. It wasn't called for and it wasn't really predictable based on his build at the time.

But, after looking at the pictures and seeing the carnage, there are some parts that did fail that might not have failed had the engine been forged.

I just hope he can pinpoint the main failure point. It looks like it was the cam from the discussion.

I realize forging the rotating assembly doesn't make the engine unbreakable. Those of talking about stroking the motor are looking at strengthing the weak parts and vulnerabilities of what we have now. Both DarthEmma and I have blowers...so enough said there. When I have my cam done I'll certainly be going with a 3 bolt cam. I'm Getting the JRE 3 bolt blower cam kit with all the upgraded valvetrain goodies, larger injectors and the LPE fuel pump and will be taking it to Ted to have the work done. If I was in Mike's shoes (and I'm glad I'm not) I'd rebuild with a stroker. He's in Michigan and I hear Livernois claims that they hav not hada single failure yet, just saying.

When the trans was replaced, an underdrive pulley went on the car.

Prior to the transmission incident the car ran & performed flawlessly....
I really doubt that hurt anything in your motor. I did hundreds of rev limiter clutch drops in my old car and never hart anything in the motor. Transmissions, rear end and clutches were a different story. Going from zero torque to all she's got in a split second has to be harder that going from everything to nothing.

I'm hoping to get the balancer pulled tomorrow.

I'm expecting to find something broken in there....the big question will still remain the sequence in how things happened....

I'm going to drop a crate LS3 back in the car and leave it alone. ( aside from full bolts ons and a tune )

Correct....the "hot" cam on a 112 LSA isn't really the best choice for the LS3.

I cant see how a sudden loss of load when the output shaft could have caused this damage...Logically thinking all it would have done is been running like it was on a engine dyno stand, or like the clutch was depressed to shift into second. Then the rev limiter would have functioned like it always has.

Mike, how come are you tearing it apart inside the car instead of outside where it would be easier. I have to admire your abilities though.
