How old are you and how much trouble do you want to get into.
Cape May is nice and layed back. Wildwood just north of the cape has a major board walk and plenty of night action.

I hit Avalon/Ocean City as my Surf beaches
Point Pleasant/Belmar are nice and a bit further north.

Im from belmar, point pleasant area. Both nice towns. Point pleasant is probably the best mix... Boardwalk with family rides, not overcrowded like seaside or wildwood, nicer looking town. Handful of good bars for all different crowds and age groups.

Wildwood area is fun too, not too far from AC and beaches are still free.

haha now that's a loaded couple of questions... The baby is going starting his second year of college, but...I'm a young mom.... so that kind of answers the age question....and I should make up for trouble I missed since I was a young mom...19...missed those college parties...or maybe not..kind of a light weight.

We've been to OC we usually head further south to Chincoteague Island..have a shorter time frame so figured stay closer to home MA. I limit my surfing to the web though...although I am sure I would be entertaining. Thanks for the suggestions I'm going to check that out on the maps of the area.

Looks like two votes for Point Pleasant/Belmar I'll check it out. Any suggestions on places to stay? Would like to see the beach/ocean but not have to ransom the hubby...although maybe that would work....hmmmm. I was also told there's a state beach ...where's that in proximity

Island beach state park? That's just south of seaside... Exit 70ish on the garden state parkway? Could be wrong. I hear it's very nice there. So many places to go they are all nice, mostly lol.

Are you looking for something quiet and relaxing?

Me and my girlfriend stayed at a bed and breakfast in spring lake last month. It wasn't on the beach(8 blocks away maybe) but I'm 10 min from the beach on a normal day anyway so we didn't care. It was called the evergreen inn very nice and affordable.

if your looking for a nice beach area and town with plenty of hotels and houses to rent. checkout long beach island (LBI) very nice little town clean and friendly. but it doesnt have that much night life there. but it is close by to both point pleasant more family friendly and seaside ( where they film the jersey shore show on mtv) seaside is family friendly during the day, but try to get outta there before dark. lol as stated earlier belmar is a very nice beach and they have a few bars there but not to much else. more of a locals beach. cape may is very nice and they have alot of bed and breakfast places there. so again depending on what you are looking for. good news is there all really not that far away from each other so you can stay in one area and hit the rest within an hour and a half ride.

My wife and I go down to Wildwood every year. We stay at the Holly Beach Bed and Breakfast on Spicer Ave. The owners are very nice and they have a nice porch to hang out on and relax. There is a lot of good resturants/bars close by. Its 2 and a half blocks from the board walk so it close enough to walk and far enough to relax some. Cape May is about a 5 minute drive and there is lots and lots to do and see there! The other suggestions are all great choices as well. You have some research to do, You better start Surfing! LOL

Here is a rundown of the southern Jersey Shore towns that I am familiar with. Sorry if I offend anyone.

Atlantic City - The adult's playground. Go here for the shopping and trouble, avoid if you actually want to go onto their free beach. It's not the cleanest beach I've seen.

Ocean City - The family beach. It's a dry town, so you won't find any bars or restaurants that serve any adult beverages. The beach is cleaner, but crowded. There's a $5 beach tag fee for the day, or $10 for the week. I believe it was recently (last few years) voted as one of the best beaches in Jersey, but I could be wrong. They have a really nice boardwalk and with plenty of great food places to check out.

Sea Isle City - One of my personal favorites. You can drive straight down from OC to here. This is where a lot of bars are and you are most likely to find one to your liking. I was there for Memorial Day Weekend and visited the Ocean Drive (lots of college kids) frequently. Shenanigans, I think, was a bar geared towards the older crowd. They also have beach tag fees similar to Ocean City, but if you avoid the parts of the beach that have lifeguards, you can probably avoid purchasing a tag (further north). If you go here, La Costa is a nice hotel to stay at since it's in the middle of all the bars (if you're into that) and WaWa is across the street.

Avalon - I've only been here once and it was a day trip. There wasn't really much to do, but there are bars in town. It's very beautiful here and it's also very upscale. Some local celebrities from Pennsylvania frequent here from what I've heard. I know for a fact that Joe Paterno has a house in town.

Stone Harbor - I've driven through here once and wish I could give more details, but I knew a bunch of kids from my high school would go here every summer. Not sure if they charge to go on the beach or not.

Wildwood aka Wildhood - This has the worst rap amongst everyone I've ever encountered. If you're under the age of 14 and you really want to have fun on the boardwalk, this is the place to be. There are lots of games to play and a small amusement park as well. The beach is free, but it's also filthy. If you're looking for high school kids and young college students up to no good, this is the place to be. I went here last summer on a whim and quickly left after I realized I was surrounded by kids on their senior week trip (I went in mid-June). There are also plenty of hotels/motels/inns to accommodate your lodging needs.

Again, sorry if I offended anyone with my critique. And I did mention a lot of adult activities in this post, so please use good judgement and don't drink and drive.
