Vararam Owners Something strange I've noticed
So I been really on checking my MPG's to see if I'm losing or gaining. In my last two test my CPU AVG has gone UP when I turn the AC on(Hitting the Snowflake button) How is that even possible, FYI my current AVG is 25.1 up from 22 setting cruise to 72mph, but it's only been 2 days.

If you've been running with the windows down before now, the improvement in aerodynamics of the car with the windows up is improving your mileage.

Naw I never drive with the windows down on the highway, but it happens not when the fan is on by itself, but when the AC button is pressed.

![]() I know I spend a lot more time in second, third, and fourth than I ever did before. As for the AC actually raising your MPG? Um, good question. I can't remember the last time I drove when I didn't have the AC on (avg high last month was 102). My MPGs have held steady at around 21mpg with the Vararam compared to 21.3mpg for the 25k miles without it. I've only recently seen a drop into the 18-20mpg range due to the traffic flow changes associated with kids going back to school and messing with my commute.

Time to experiment! I fill up tomorrow....I typically get 22-23 if I can keep my foot out of it. If my foot goes in it i get about 21.3-21.7....Itd only be better if California didnt have soo many damn hills...

I've heard the digital mpg readouts are not accurate when you run w/air conditioning. If I remember correctly, I read that on a page when I was researching the aerodynamics vs air conditioning comparison (maybe the mythbusters website?). I personally believe it's absolute BS that having the windows down could cause as much mpg drop as running your air conditioner -- and all the searching I did on that topic said the same thing.
You really need to do a fillup, then drive, record the mileage and fill back up to get an accurate measure of miles/gallon, don't trust the readout. |

windows down will hurt MPG I learned this on a Civic. The computer MPG counter seems to be 1/2 mile low for the first 1/2 tank but gets better closer to acurate on a full refill. I check my gas mileage almost every refill. I try to refill on 1/2 tank, but from time to time I get below 1/4 tank and I notice MPG is dead on then.
This has held consistant for me for over a year and 30,000 miles regardless of A/C or not.
