Agreed, and also, fuel mileage is the name of the game here, especially if they want to keep a V8 in the camaro.

Speaking of FE, as a very rough estimate, this bumps Corvette in Eco mode to 31.5 MPG.

Juechter said repurposing the 8L90 for non-transaxle applications will be relatively simple. The eight-speed automatic is pretty much confirmed for use in GM trucks to help Chevy and GMC compete with the much lighter, and thus more fuel-efficient, aluminum-bodied 2015 Ford F-150.

The 8 speed in Chrysler products is great for gas mileage but driving it really is annoying. It shifts way to often, esp coming to a stop. It's very annoying!! (and yes I work for Chrysler) Just to add to the pot... driving a stick is more fun no matter the driving conditions. I love getting in traffic so I get a chance to shift more.... Hate being on the highway stuck in 6th, usually have to drop it to 3rd every few miles and step on it!

I believe its inevitable.. soon we'll be talking 10 n 12 speed like a bicycle. manually shifting will occur every 4 mph.. hahaha

Really won't be that much later, a few hundred pounds depending on model. The current F-series is grossly overweight compared to GM and Ram trucks.

I thought GM and Ford developed the 8 speed together, if so it will show up in the F-150 also.

I doubt it will be that soon, but they will disappear. between the 8 and up speed transmission, CVT's, and the fact most younger drivers cant even drive a stick I don't see how they survive. the only possible place would be in lower end vehicles so as to keep the price down. though I'm betting the pony cars will always have an MT offering, just not on all trim levels.

The answer is probably yes. Almost all of chryslers vehicles use an 8 or 9 speed transmission. Next year the challenger will get it too. These extra speeds allow the car to launch much faster and get better mpg. GM will be using one everywhere they can to meet CAFE standards while being able to say 'faster acceleration and better MGP' in their ads.

there's a reason why BMW had to offer a manual transmission in the M5... people complained even though the dual-clutch is better.

but for you guys that want auto... this is a must! the A6 is really 60's technology with extra gears. I think it only makes sense that GM will have sort of dual clutch auto for the hi-po Caddy's and next gen Camaro

Yes they complained, and BMW listened. But hardly anyone bought the model with the Manual.

Even Porsche is on the bandwagon to kill the MT.

I hope GM continues to offer the true MT, but the bottom line is if sales don't support it, we will not get one.

I have owned MT cars for over 30 years, and I still love shifting gears myself.

I hope to continue as long as my health allows me to. Then and only then will I get a automatic.

You're missing one minor keyword. The 8 speed can 'UP-shift' faster that the PDK. This is great for acceleration numbers, but I believe a dual-clutch transmission will be better on a road-course where up-shifts, and down-shifts are needed.

I drove a first Gen PDK Porsche that transmission is amazing. But it does leave you feeling disconnected. For pure speed it wins hands down and the programming is perfect when you get on it hard it shifts right when you want it to. But for those who like the connection of shifting your own gears its just another automatic.
