And that's why I have never bought new. Let someone else take the big slam off the lot. Not that I relish in someone else misfortune, but there's always someone out there in the must sell situation or the guy who can just afford to get a new car every year. I'm sure there's no better feeling then that new car smell, but not for the price you have to pay.

This would happen with any make/model.... You paid 48k for a 1LE and I just got my ZL1 for 50k.... Looks like you didn't do you research and over paid..

However 28k is a very low offer... I got 26k for my 2012 SS trade in.

German and European cars are even worse, just read a big article about how after a year or two they lose half there value. To put things in perspective look at the ZL1's bought for around 60k and a 13' is selling for 45-48k.

So, yes, you can get more money on a private sale, but you earn every penny of it.
Those are my reasons. I just don't have the patience for inconsiderate people. Plus, they know where you live, so if there's any issue with the car later on and they blame you, you could get a brick through your window. And with a sports car, there are also some people that just want to test drive one and/or "see what it can do" without having to fuss with all the paperwork and follow-ups at a dealership. These are all what-ifs, but I don't need the drama.

Here's a by-owner-sale nightmare scenario that happened to a friend of mine. He sold his car on a Friday evening, so he didn't cancel the insurance on it until Monday. That night the new owner got into an accident and just jumped out and ran away (I guess the car wasn't worth that much, or the guy was wanted by the cops). The cops run the VIN, and the car gets traced back to my friend. The insurance is still in his name, and since the buyer paid in cash and hadn't registered the car yet, there was no evidence that the car had been sold. For some reason, instead of trying to contact my friend, the cops just put a warrant out for his arrest and didn't pursue it further. He only found out about ANY of this months later when he renewed his drivers license and his name came up as a wanted man. He contacted the cops and eventually got it straightened out. I think the main thing that kept him out of jail was that all the witnesses said the driver was a tall Mexican guy with long hair, and my friend is a short white Irish guy. Even if it had been his car, he definitely wasn't the driver when it wrecked.

I traded in my 2015 2SS that I bought in April for my 2015 1LE 3 weeks ago with a sticker around $49,300. I waited til Black Friday sales and got it for $37,700 because dealer discount was included. I lost the 0 for 60 but did get a very low rate and my payments stayed about the same after all the dust settled. I did have some equity in the 2015 SS, which allowed me to walk out the door for $30k.

This is not a typical scenario, I know. with that deal, I basically drove it off the lot and the depreciation was gone already.

Me, just about. I bought '14 1LT in June of that year (I paid it off long ago). A few days ago I traded that in for a 2SS/RS. Normally I wouldn't have done that, but with the clearance sale going on, I saved 10k on the new one. I still lost 10k on my trade-in due to depreciation so really, it's a wash. Still, if I had waited until next year I would have lost even more on it. Since I went from a 1LT to a 2SS/RS, I think of it less as a trade-in and more as an upgrade.

I actually thought 3 times about buying a Camaro, in 2008 I thought about it and ordered a 2010. In April 2009 when I got forced retirement I canceled my order. in October 2009 I thought about it again and reordered a 2010. In 2012 after riding in my son's 2011 Camaro Convertible I thought about it again and traded my 2010 with Becky for my 2012 Camaro Convertible... I think I made a good decision...
