V8 Manual Trans question
My wife picked up her 2SS/RS this afternoon and while driving it home told me that she couldn't find 5th and 6th gear. I told her it was probably the skip shift but she told me that even when she stopped and tried the gears she could only feel four and that she was getting on it pretty good. When I got home the car was parked in the garage waiting for insurance and I tried going through the gears and I could only find 4 forward gears. (Motor Off) Does the tranny just need to be broken in more or are we just not feeling the other two gears?

Sounds wierd- you should be able to get all 6 gears no matter where you are sitting.

it's NOT skip shift...that only goes from 1st to 4th in certain situations...nothing to do with 5th and 6th. You have to put a little pressure on the shifter towards the right to go to 5th...it's there...trust me.

You should be filling 5 and 6, like Power Freak said they are towards the right, dont worry about throwing it in reverse there is a lock out solenoid that wont let you engage reverse if the car is over 5mph.

5th and 6th are spring loaded back to center. You have to push right to get them. They will not just naturally go over without a little push.

I guess I'm just used to my 69. Sitting in the car with the motor off all I can find is 4 gears. When I slide the shifter to the right I get reverse. We haven't driven the car since my wife brought it home, (Still waiting for the insurance to come through as it's not listed in our insurer's computer). I find 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th but when I try to go to 5th I get reverse so I think I'm just missing the gate somewhere. It's just not as noticeable as the old hurst 4-speeds.

You shouldnt be able to put it in reverse mine will lock you out of reverse if the car is turned off. It allso wont let me put it in reverse if the car is moving forward what so ever even a few mph it will lock it out.....But i can roll through all 6 gears with the car off....

On cars with smaller engines, that is the way to drive (higher RPMs before upshift), and is the norm. But with the torque on an engine like this, you can do it lower, without bogging. I.e. you can drive the car around under 2000 without bogging (at least I could with the LS1 car). Of course, play around to see what works; but this is one of the big-torquey-V8 advantages - you can operate at low RPMs (driving around, even climbing hills) where other vehicles have to drop a gear or two and make a high-RPM racket. The payoff for having a big V8 isn't just laying down rubber; but can be had even driving around casually and effortlessly at low RPMs. Even a 700 horsepower 2Liter 4cyl twinturbo godzillabeast can't give you this. And with the M6, learn revmatching/doubleclutching and playing 3-gear hopscotch (constant speed but switching between 3 gears without the car juddering) becomes just another of those everyday joys the car can bring. |
