Backup Camera
As we all know, the rearward visibility of our Camaros is not the best. So I decided to install a backup cam on my 2014 Z/28. It came out pretty well so I thought I would share my experience.
I used a wireless setup where the camera is connected to a wireless transmitter and the monitor to a wireless receiver alleviating the need to run a video cable from the trunk of the car to the dash. The whole thing cost me $38 on Amazon and I am pleased with the quality. See the pictures to see how I installed it. |

Looks complex. Running wires from the back to the front is very, very easy in this car.

Actually, the installation is a lot less complicated than one might expect....there's no need to remove the rear seat or other panels to run the video cable. I installed 2 wireless transceivers when I upgraded the oem head unit to the Pioneer AVH-4200NEX in my '11 SS. The 2 receivers are tucked behind the dash & secured with zipties, while 1 transmitter is located in the trunk (rear backup camera) the other transmitter is attached near the fusebox in the engine compartment (front curb camera). There's only 2 wires per transceiver unit that need to be connected (12VDC & ground) & the video plug that connects to either the camera or monitor source; the transmitter unit also provides a 12VDC connection to power the camera. It's less time consuming & not as labor intensive to install as compared to routing cables back & forth throughout the vehicle.

How well do the wireless receivers work? You don't need to remove any seats to route cables. You really only have to remove the bottom panel near the door and that's about it. Everything else should be easy.

They work really well...the resoultion is good & I haven't experienced any signal interference with external sources. The previous owner of my 2RS/SS upgraded the factory Boston Acoustic system with Kenwood speakers & 4-way amp with an Alpine 10" sub & amp (+Fark T-harness), but retained the OEM head unit. Being unfamiliar (at that time) with the Gen5 wiring system & layout, I chose both the PAC ProRadio5 kit (to retain the factory control knobs) along with the wireless video transceivers to keep the installation simple. Now that I'm upgrading the audio system with new Infinity Kappa speakers, Memphis Audio amplifiers & subwoofers, the plan is to route a video cable with the rca patch cables back to the trunk to connect to the backup camera & amp's (deleting the factory BA amp & T-harness) & to run new wire to all the speakers. I really don't like running cables through the firewall into the engine bay, so I will keep the front camera setup the way that it is.

Mounted it in the lower valance/grill...so I could avoid "kissing" the curb~lol. Thinking about also adding a proximity sensor in the front to give an audible warning (like the rear parking assist does). I seen one on a Camaro gen5 website for $80, but cannot remember which one (will have to check my online history)....will post it.
