For an SS, from what I've been able to find, you need the 20" rims.

It isn't. Only the wheel and tire is different.

For the SS you MUST have 20" rims. Tire rack shows only one rim for these tires (and it's $1440 each, ouch).

As for tires according to tire rack your choices are:

Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow 245/45R20 $235USD
Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 245/45R20 $260USD

There might be more but this is all tire rack shows.

And of course you need the TPMS sensors for each wheel as well.

Hey,

It was the 4 Tires (X-ice), 4 Rims (18" 5-Spokes), 4 TPMS, Mounted, Balanced, Shipped, Taxes, Duties and everything you need to install the tires on ur car for $1780ish. Run a quote from the tirerack website and once you do the 'estimate shipping' it will give you a price including all of the above. Like I said it was a pretty good price (compared to other quotes I had).

Actually, if you choose "Winter tire package" or whatever for the SS, it still gives you the option of an 18" rim for some reason...

Gents, I have some news regarding the tire sizes for winter rubber. I have been asking for a long time just how thin a tire I could get!? My dealer finally did some work today and told me that I could run as thin as 225/60 R18. this makes much more sense than trying to slap on 245/50 R19's in the snow. He has given me the choice of either a Toyo or a Firestone Winterforce. Any ideas on which is the better winter tire? I have run Toyo before and they were quite good but very soft on pavement. Not sure if it's the same tire line, I will ask. Firestone is new to me as I have never run them before. originally they recommended Pirelli Scorpions, but I am not sure if they make this smaller size. Anyways, I will dig a little and tell you all more soon enough.

About sizes, aspect ratios and widths of tire, I thought this may come in useful in this thread:

Width x Aspect Ratio = Section Height
Section Height x 2 = Combined Section Height
Combined Section Height + Wheel Diameter = Tire Diameter

Example: 185/60R14 85H or 185/60HR14

185mm x .60=111mm
111mm x 2=222mm
222mm + 355.6mm(14")= 577.6mm or 22.74"

The first number is the width of the tire in millimeters, measured from sidewall to sidewall. To convert to inches, divide by 25.4 In the example above, the width is 185mm or 7.28".

The second number is the aspect ratio. This is a ratio of sidewall height to width. In the example above, the tire is 7.28" wide, multiply that by the aspect ratio to find the height of one sidewall. In this case, 185x0.60=111mm or 7.28"x0.60=4.36".

The last number is the diameter of the wheel in inches.

To figure the outside diameter of a tire, take the sidewall height and multiply by 2,(remember that the diameter is made up of 2 sidewalls, the one above the wheel, and the one below the wheel) and add the diameter of the wheel to get your answer.

I got it from Tireracks' FAQ's.

The ONLY reason I can think of why they have the 18" option is for the rears. I haven't really paid attention to the rear brakes in the SS but if it's like other cars I've seen, then they are smaller than the fronts. Assuming they are the same size in the rear as the LT (or even are the exact same brakes), you should be able to fit the 18" rims on the REAR of the car. The front, with those large Brembos, can only ever use 20" or higher. Again I have no idea how big the rear brakes on the SS are so this is just speculation on my part. Personally having 20" rims on the front and 18" rims on the rear would just look stupid, especially since getting matching rims would be near impossible.

Unless it's a typo, in the brocure, or the website ( I can't remember where I saw it) the rear brakes are bigger... But unless the calipers are ginormous, there's a slim chance we can squeeze 18s on... A very slim chance... Not very likely at all... lmao

Hey guys,
We have a 2LT RS, and the best price we could get including tire sensors was from the Tire Barn, taxes and delivery in was about $1750 CDN (18"). We tired to find rims around here and called many Canadian stores, all said that they could not get the bolt pattern needed, and GM wanted about $300+ each to order in steel rims.
We were told that 18" would work all the way aroud, we are having them installed tomorrow at the dealer - will post if problems occur.
P.S. - "Garage it" , we get it, enjoy your extra money!

For those who have bought from tire rack: are you able to install them yourself? From what I understand, the dealership needs to program the computer to read the new sensor... has anyone had that done yet? costs?
