Track cars with automatic transmissions _ trans cooler efficiency ?

How many people do we have that track their automatic Camaros fairly hard ? What are most people running for a trackable trans cooler and how much does it really lowerr temps when tracking the car ?

Hammdo tracks a good bit with his Auto.

I track and use a true trans cooler, my last time at the track (2 miles, 12 turns) 30 minutes, my max trans temp was 193. Drag strip and cruising I see 160 to 170 almost all of the time.

I do not have before and after, but I do know Auto's do not like getting hot so I never tried without a trans cooler

I run a TruCool 40btu mounted closest to clean air behind lower grill. Heat Exchanger up top.

Also I recommend to set your tap shift setting to still UP shift on shift points for you automatically, one less thing to think about. This setting should only activate at WOT when at the predetermined shift RPM/Vehicle Speed. Kind of a safety net to stay off the limiter and focus on passing being passed or braking! You can still shift early etc with buttons

Keep control of downshifts obviously.

Just went yesterday, track temps 110°.

Max Temps:

182° Trans using comp mode, sport, and paddles, Mostly in 3rd (into and out of turns), 4th, some 5th gear on long straights...
273° oil temps
212° coolant
147° IAT2

It was damn hot (100° ambient)...

I’d say that was doing pretty damn good...

My trans tune is set to upshift automatically even when in manual mode. Just last year I noticed a quirk when the trans temp rose , it would upshift earlier for what I suspect was a transmission saving mode and would not let me downshift as soon as I liked. When temps came down, it would act normal. Need to keep temps lower this time at NCM.

Thanks for your input.

If you don’t mind, what type of trans cooling system are you running? I never had any issue until I changed to the 3.91 gears last year and I am assuming I was using the trans to cut speed some before using my brakes and that contributed to the heat buildup that wasn’t there before.

Did my own flowtie, custom air dams to force air where I wanted it..

Works very well...

I'm Supercharged, pulled down, shift between 6000 to 6500 RPM, 3.45 gears, Eaton TruTrac etc...

PM me if you want to talk on the phone...
