I like a manual when I can just get out and drive with not many stops and starts, Around curves and such, but when you get into traffic and have to stop and go all the time it gets to be a bother really fast.
On the other hand I have learned you can drive an automatic much easier and many times faster both on the open road and in city traffic. You just have to think a little more with the Automatic, anticipate where you need to shift a little earlier. Once you get that down you can have alot of fun with the Automatic. Modern automatics will even engine brake for you in situations like going down a steep grade, the transmissions in both my HHR and Sky will downshift to a lower gear automatically. It is amazing what these new transmissions can do.
Some people will live in the dark ages forever and drive a Stick. While others will embrace new technology and use the Automatic.
Can someone confirm wether or not the automatic in the V8 Camaro will downshift when going downhill automatically???

I had no clue that mine would and I thought something was wrong the first time it did it. but now that I have two cars with different transmissions that do the same thing, a 4 speed auto in the HHR and 5 speed Auto in the Sky, I feel all new Automatics GM come up with will have it. It is a weird feeling the first few times it downshifts, but you eventually get used to it.
Sometimes though I still like to shift my automatics by hand, hold them in a lower gear longer of pull them into a lower gear going into a corner. I have been driving automatics and manuals for almost 40 years, and I think I have learned a few tricks with the Automatic to make them fun to drive.

Thanks for the response. I'm almost 90% sure I will get a manual at this point. many factors are involved now with my decision. Having the auto be quicker than the manual is not one of them.. Mainly it is my wife being able to drive the car in the end that overrides me the joy of manual shifting.. lol..In the end though, she'll let me choose what I want, however I might feel guilty choosing the manual. I did offer to teach her how to drive stick but she refused..

No matter which you choose I am sure you will have a blast driving it...
You can always get her an LS model with an automatic along with your SS then you both can have one.

Pontiac says 0-60 mph performance is expected to be about 4.7 seconds, with quarter-mile time about 13.0 seconds (at 108 mph). These are the numbers that pontiac is claiming for the G8 GXP, didn't specify manual or auto. So, I doubt the numbers from Edmunds are right.

It seems to me the slushbox and stick should be pretty close to each other because of having the same amount of forward gears, and the ratios aren't too terribly far apart. With a little programming and tweaking, I'm sure the slushbox will be able to be very competitive with a stick, if not maybe better than your average stick driver.

Yeah, getting two is not an option as we need at least one 4 door sedan as a family car...

Well, be that as it may, i'm still getting the manual regardless--with the few mods i'm planning anyway, should be right where the alleged automatic is
I think maybe they ran the times using the computer granny stuff.. I know in the GTO if you left TC on it hurt the cars performance.. On the launch AND on shifts If would get Rubber the TC would Pull the throttle back to regain traction.. AND you could FEEL it happen..( in the Auto anyway probally the same with the M6.) And If the Launch control Does Hold revs for the launch And Feathers the gas for you for traction It Very possibly Could slow you down as well...

I was reading an article about a track test of a new Porsche Carrera Automatic vs stick and the automatic was several tenth faster in the 1/4 mile. The fact was the automatic was easier to launch and shifted faster down the track.

For crying out loud. If you want a manual, buy the manual; if you want an auto, buy an auto. The car weighs 600lbs more than the Corvette, so just because the car has the same engine, doesn't mean it will be just as fast. Come on people. Be realistic. Don't just wish up anything.

werd.

90% of the manual peeps on here are stuck in the old "it aint a muscle car if it aint got a stick" style of thinking. ok... fine, look at top nhra dragsters and what they have for a transmission. kinda goes along the same lines of the "if it aint got a v-8, it aint a musclecar" mentality. its a camaro, its a muscle car... its just making more power with less.

if you wanna play around, get a manual. if you wanna go fast, get an auto.

im about to swap in my new auto for race season this fall. 700r4, 3600 stall, reverse manual valve body, and transbrake. im shooting for 11s. and yes, its my dd.
