In 1989, I was a teenager dating a girl that worked with me at Montgomery Ward. I had a lowered Toyota mini-truck that was an automatic & she had a Fiat X1/9 that was a manual. Being that her car was nicer, we would use it when going out.
One Saturday, we were heading to party after the store closed. She said that the boy should be driving the girl, not the other way around, so she taught me to drive stick in the near empty parking lot & the rest is history.
I miss that car, because it was a blast to drive.

My grandpa had a 1940's Willys jeep that he kept at the lake house to move the boat and pontoon in and out of the lake. He had taught me many times how to start it up (which had a specific way) and finally taught me how to drive it when I turned 12 y/o. At 13 he was letting me back the boat and the pontoon down the ramp and pulling them out along with driving it around the gravel roads in the area. Good times!

2008-9ish I used to drive off lease cars for a local auction. An 06 GTO in Brazen Orange came up and they asked if I could drive stick and I said yes(couldn’t really). After the chase car left, I figured it out in the parking lot. Killed it a few times but by the time I got it to auction had the hang of it. Between more GTOs, lots of wranglers, lots of Saab 9-3s, one c5, I got pretty good at it on my own.

Your post reminded me that in high school a classmate received a new 911 from his parents on his 16th birthday. At first, he wouldn't drive it because he couldn't get used to the clutch, so his dad had an automatic clutch installed.

1975 on Hwy 63 in Water Oak, MS. 1968 Ford Red F100 LWB Step Side with a 240 CI Six-Cylinder and 3 Speed on the column. I was 11 years old. I needed to learn how to drive a column shifter so I could hay the cows before school and load the truck back up in the afternoons. I wish to this day that I had kept that truck.

Had a older girl I knew at the time teach me in her 1976 Honda Civic. The car had a huge hole in the floor so you had to be careful your feet didn't go through it and get bent backwards. I was 16 she was 19. Been driving them ever since. I love getting lectures on here about having an auto haha. Ahhhh the junk I used to drive.

I forgot to mention in my post that the girl who taught me to drive stick was older too. Times were different & simple then.

I learned on a dirt bike when I was 10 or 11. I learned how the clutch and throttle work together and it was easy to transition to a car. I don't remember the first manual car I drove, but never had any issues. The first manual car that I bought was an 87 Fiero GT which was great fun. I've always chosen a manual whenever I have a choice. I've had everything from manual diesel pickups (Dodge Cummins that would start in 2nd or even 3rd when empty) to S2000s, FR-S, FiST, to Z06s and CTS-Vs. Unfortunately, manual options seem to going away, although kudos to GM and Ford for keeping them around in performance cars. I read the new C8 may be auto only, which really sucks if true.

I will say it took me years to master heel and toe downshifting. Now it is second nature. I get enjoyment from perfectly smooth shifting and look for opportunities to downshift into a braking zone.
