[SOLVED] 2013 2SS M6: Service Stabilitrak, no gauges, loud pop, crank but no start

I resolved this issue but it had me freaked out so I thought I should share in case it happens to anyone else. TL;DR - try a new battery.

Over the last week or two I noticed my car sounded like it was struggling to turn over, like the battery was dying. The battery is less than a year old, the voltmeter read fine, and it never actually failed to start, so I didn't think much of it. Yesterday evening when I tried to start it, it struggled to turn over a couple times before a loud pop came from the exhaust, the "Service Stabilitrak" message came up on the dash, and all of the gauges read zero. It idled but I didn't want to make the problem worse so I killed it. I tried again and it cranked a few times with no sign of firing.

My heart stopped and my mind jumped to fears of catastrophic engine damage. But the problem appeared on a cold start after sitting for a couple of days, not while I was driving, so simple electrical issues were my next thought. A quick search on here showed a few people with similar symptoms and resolving them with a new battery. I got a ride to Autozone, swapped out the battery, and she fired right up without issue. Well, no issues besides my clock being wrong and my windows needing calibration. A much better alternative to a new engine

Thanks for sharing!

What's still of interest, though, is why the battery died after one year.

In various vehicles, I've had 5 year batteries die after 1 year and had them last 9 or 10 years. Luck of the draw.

That's something I'm still curious about and will keep in mind over the life of this new battery. My Forza exhaust controller is always on, but according to them, it shouldn't draw much current at all when not in use. As in, I shouldn't have a problem if I drive the car at least once a month. I'm wondering if my alternator may be going bad or if I just got a bad battery. Either way, the battery was replaced under warranty for free.
