StabiliTrak. what is it and why does it stay lit when i press the button

I read about this in the manual and it says it helps in rough conditions. has anyone had any experience with it or know more about it? also, it seems i cant shut it off. It stays illuminated even when i press the button

StabiliTrak does a few things. First it maintains equal power to both of your drive wheels. This way you won't have one wheel peeling out and the other one not. Helps you maintain control of vehicle. Second it has sensors 360 degrees around the vehicle that will sense if you are over steering or understeering, to prevent you from fishtailing. If it senses that you will lose control it will automatically down shift, and apply brake pressure to certain tires to maintain control of vehicle. It also has roll-over mitigation that will do same if it senses you are rolling over.

StabiliTrak is just GMs name for Electronic Stability Control. Say for example you are coming around a corner to fast in wet conditions and one of your tires starts to slide while the other three are still gripping the road, StabiliTrak will activate and reduce power (braking) to the tire that is sliding and keep power to the others in order to straighten the car out.

Works like a champ! If you press the StabilTrak button once, it turns off StabiliTrak, and if you press it twice, it sets the car to "Competitive Mode". Try getting used to it in a wet parking lot late at night and see how it works for yourself. If you've never had it before, it may "scare" you the first time it activates.

Have had Stabilitrak on several GM vehicles now and it was just one of things I knew was working for my safety, but not feeling it at all.

My Camaro however is different. Last week, I turned it and took off around some corners. It was then that I felt it. I felt more sway and body roll than I ever had before in this car. To be honest, it felt a little scary. I don't think I'll be turning it off again unless I'm running in a straight line.

No no no...

Press the button once...TC off, Stabilitrak on
Press the button twice...Competitive Mode...TC off, Stabilitrak partially off
Hold the button for about 7 seconds...Everything off, TC and Stabilitrak

OK, now here's a silly question. Why would I ever WANT to turn it off? Seems like it should be left on all the time since it really only 'kicks in' when needed for safety, right? Or does it create some sort of drag that affects gas mileage and/or tire wear during normal conditions?

You'll want to turn it off when you feel like having a bit of uncontrolled fun or feel the need to go tire shopping for a new set of Pirelli's...
