How long does it take the usb to index songs?

I have 6 gigs full on a 8 gig mini SD mini usb. I tried it out on my sis's car- finally got it to read and start playing. But it never would index. We left it in for at least 10 minutes and it still said indexing.......

She got her car in July-- maybe she needs an update? My car is on the train--- so hopefully it will work just fine!!

takes my car about 20 seconds buts its only a 2 gig that is maxed out. But sometimes if i sstart changing songs too fast, the radio display just freezes and doesnt reconginze the usb until i turn off the car and wait a minute or 2

Buy an ipod. Indexing done by the ipod and no 2500 song limit.

The first time takes the longest. How is it laid out? Lots of folders? Other files? Try and keep it as simple and clean as possible.

All mp3's. no folders- all just on the root file..... so the car won't re index every time you turn it on and off?

It indexes but it doesn't do a full reindex each time.

I have 15.6gb on a 16gb mini SD with none of the problems mentioned, it takes about 20-30 secs to index... I have each album in it's own folder and made sure that it is clean.. i.e. all ID tags for each song are complete, no orphans

I second the ipod. As much as I dislike them, they have the least performance issues with the usb port.

That's interesting. I don't understand why my Zune with nearly the same music takes a fraction of the time the USB drive takes. My library is extremely clean as well.

Yea... One of these days I'm going to pick up a used iPod so that it can live in the center console.

I believe after the initial long index (8GB - maybe 5 minutes), then next time you turn car on and go to usb that it "indexes" by just looking for changes. 15-30 seconds.
