Biggest tires on stock rim?

What is the biggest tire we can run on stock rear rim. Being told by tire shop it is 285/35/20.

I was told by a tire shop in my town they could fit 285/40/20, as long as it doesn't rub on the wheel well.

This was for the back tires.

I wouldn't push more than a 285, 275 is ideal for the stock rear rim width.

When I swapped wheels, I also swapped tires. I went with 20x9 wheels and 285/35/20 GY Eagle Supercar G2's on all 4 corners. To me, that is the max on a 9" wheel. Sure, guys will squeeze very wide tires on a smaller width wheel, but you're sacrificing handling and in a lot of cases...you get sidewall bulge and uneven tire wear. If you want to go wider, do it right and buy wider wheels as well.

I have 295 35 20 on stock rear rims. Tread is flat on the road, and they leave a even amount of rubber on the road. The fronts are : 265 40 20, and they work well also.
I would prefer to replace the rims with ZL1'S, and wider tires, but they were a big expense.

I have Nitto 555r 305 35 20 on the back stock rims. They fit a touch narrow. Did have 295 40 20 Aziens on before that.

You can fit a 305 on stock rim but would also recommend getting wider rim for bigger tire
$600 gets you these 315/35/20 nittos on 11” rim
