Looks like the sizes used on the Camaro are Z rated per the Pirelli site, which means speeds of over 149. However, there are W and Y ratings are higer speeds (168 and 186 respectively). In other words, RSHugger makes a good point about the tires...W and Y rating were created because more cars were capable of extended high speed run of well over 149 mph....

However, if you rip out the ecu and add a brand new one with an aftermarket logo on it, like people do with evos and other tuner cars, then yeah, they would be able to tell. |

I didn't quite believe it either at first so I redid the calculations with different sets of assumptions for things like wheel horsepower and cross sectional area. The lowest that I got was 175 -that was with 15% driveline loss on the automatic and a perfect rectangle for its cross sectional area. The LS3 and L99 probably make more power than advertised and I know its cross section is less than its width x height. So I believe the Camaro is capable of 180 mph, potentially more. It has gobs of power and it is fairly low and has a reasonable drag coefficient.

In the IDL on Tuesday morning, this question was asked and answered by Chryl. The SS will be electronically limited at 155. Take off the limiter and your guess is as good as mine. |

Which track do you plan on reaching over 155MPH? At the drag strip that is quite a trap speed and I don't know of many RR courses here in the US where the Camaro will make it over 155.
Just curious, not being mean, as I too am going to tune out the speed limiter. |

I dunno, haven't really checked into since my current car isn't much to take to the track. I get up to 125 with ease in my current car on the freeway so I just thought 155 sounded a bith little. Then again, as my dad always says "it's not the speed, it's how fast you get up to it".

Most cars today are electronically governed due to the speed limitations of the factory installed tires they come with. People tend to forget, with all the money a car costs and everything involved on and in a car, the only thing that actually touches the ground are the tires..... That's always taken into consideration when engineers are devloping drivetrain and suspension components: the grade and size of the tires. Even the SS, I presume most of the cars built will come with all season rubber V rated (V is rated safely for speeds up to 149 mph). The summer only tire package? They might be Z's, but those are pretty expensive, so they may still stick with V for the summer only tire option.
You remove the governor and you DEFINITELY need to get a set of Z rated tires. This car will have huge potential to hit the 170 mark. And better, larger diameter brakes (yes, I know the stock Brembos will be great, but you have to remember they're engineered to stop the car safely and reliably from no greater a speed than 155 - you'd think they'd be good to 180, but these are factory installed brakes and this is not a Ferrari). And maybe lighter weight rims. And stiffer struts and springs. |

I have driven many chevys and they all seem to be tuned for safety of what is supplied by the factory. So if they put tires that are only rated at 100-110 then they are going to put a governor around there. My Colorado, of course, had tires not rated for speed - governs at 98mph, yea it can do more, but my current tires are only rated for 95 so I am fine with it being governed there not to mention I have no reason to run a pickup that fast.
As for the Camaro, I don't plan on running 150, you are begging for some major trouble at that speed and I won't hit that speed on the track so I am fine with a governor around there.Just remember, Interstates you can get up to high speed, but cops are out and deer do run across the interstate. I'd hate to see what would happen at 150mph and meeting a deer ![]() I have a Ninja 636 which can do 150, fastest I have done is 114 - respect the power and the road

I was told that the ecm holds the top speed achieved. Dealers can pull these paramaters out of the ecm during service. If there is engine damage, you would have a hard time getting warranty work if they saw high rpm's and high speeds.
Now don't flame me if this is not so, people that know tuning, I was just told this. It may be a rumor that my dealer is trying to install fear with. |

If I could I would put my '02 10-Spoke SS 17" wheels on my new Camaro, but with such big wheel wells it will need at least 18" wheels. ZO6 wheels might work! |
