looking to purchase the BBK header kit with the small pipe section that has the 2nd O2 sensor port (bung or whatever it's called) and the wiring extensions. My question is, with the 2nd O2 sensor installed there will that prevent the C.E.L. from coming on.

also will be looking to install a cam down the road. any suggestions on nice street cam (not radical).

I ran BBK shorty headers for a while on my car (previous owner installed them). They were good headers. Held up well, but ultimately they didn't make any extra power with the stock cats still in place. I ended up pulling them, selling them to a friend who wanted them, and installing long tube headers.

Looking through the link and putting in my car for kicks and grins I see that it has an option for long tube headers which would make more sense with talking about needing O2 extensions. Any way you go, if you install long tube headers you will eventually throw a CEL. The reason for it is primarily 2 fold, 1) You moved the position on the primary O2 sensor further down the exhaust path and that is throwing calculations back to the computer different than before, and 2) You have increased the flow between the two O2 sensors and as such is different than the factory calculations.

So to summarize, shorty headers no CEL but no real gain in power and a lot left on the table when you do a cam. While long tube headers will throw a CEL and require a tune to eliminate it however, you'll gain more power immediately and not leave power on the table with future modifications.

As for a cam, I installed BTR stage 2 NA cam this year and it has been a lot of fun. Nice street manners, nice power, and a lot of fun!

Thanks PYRO. I have pretty much eliminated the shorty's. But man I was really trying to avoid that damn C.E.L. Don't wont to get a tune until I'm done with mods. Headers and a cam is about all I plan to do to the motor then maybe a tune at some point. Funny you suggest that cam, thats the one I've been considering.

A stock L99 would show better gain from a tune, but a tune on a stock LS3 will also show gains. With long tubes you leave a lot of power on the table without a tune.

There are mail-order tuners who give free tune updates as you add parts you buy from them. You might find a local shop that will do that as well.
If more is coming quickly then wait, but if thinking longer it will probably be worth it..
